in the doldrums quote]

Meaning

In low spirits; feeling dull and drowsy.
Origin

The Doldrums is the region of calm winds, centered slightly north of the equator and between the two belts of trade winds, which meet there and neutralize each other. It is widely assumed that the phrase 'in the doldrums' is derived from the name of this region. Actually, it's the other way about. In the 19th century, 'doldrum' was a word meaning 'dullard; a dull or sluggish fellow' and this probably derived from 'dol', meaning 'dull' with its form taken from 'tantrum'. That is, as a tantrum was a fit of petulance and passion, a doldrum was a fit of sloth and dullness, or one who indulged in such.
The term was used to mean 'a general state of low spirits' in the early 19th century. For example, this piece from The Morning Herald, April 1811:
"I am now in the doldrums; but when I get better, I will send [for] you."
In 1824, Lord Byron used the phrase in a nautical context in the verse tale The Island:
"From the bluff head where I watch'd to-day, I saw her in the doldrums; for the wind Was light and baffling."
[Note: baffling winds are those which are shifting and variable, making progress under sail impossible.]
'In the doldrums' came to refer specifically to sailing ships that were becalmed and unable to progress.
The region now called the 'The Doldrums' wasn't named until the mid 19th century and the naming came about as the result of a misapprehension. When reports of ships that were becalmed in that equatorial region described them as being 'in the doldrums', it was mistakenly thought that the reports were describing their location rather than their state. The earliest known reference to the region's name in print is Matthew Maury's The physical geography of the sea, 1855:
"The 'equatorial doldrums' is another of these calm places. Besides being a region of calms and baffling winds, it is a region noted for its rains."

:D

Dangerfield burns Stephen Hill twice to get a goal and narrowly miss the second.

**** that kid's going to be star.

Told you all. Have said from before the draft I wanted Dangerfield, even over Rioli.

You could say he's a real 'Danger Man' for the years to come.

I made that up. Bookmark it because all the cools kids will be saying it soon.

Melbourne might lose to the GC this week.

They were horrible against the Lions. Any decent forward and the lions would have won.

Bulldogs are going to get found out too, selfish lazy team at the moment.

I wouldn't write St. Kilda off yet though.

Alot of noise over in the West this morning that a site has been chosen for a new stadium, and it ain't Subi. Sounds like Burswood.

I agree with you about the Saints lamaros it's still very early days.

I hope you're right as it'll mean Riewoldt, Goddard and Montagna will be firing, and all 3 are currently doing bugger all for my SC side.

Just curious to see how people have changed their views in the first few rounds of the season. I had my ladder predictions going confidently, but already they looks to be fraying at the edges.

For one, there seems to be no way on earth that Gold Coast will finish above anyone, let alone West Coast, while the Bulldogs and Saints looks likely to slide out of the top 4 on current form. North also looks to be in trouble with second year blues.

Wondering what others are prepared to say they got wrong already this year?

1. Collingwood
2. Western Bulldogs
3. Geelong
4. St Kilda
5. Hawthorn
6. Fremantle
7. Essendon
8. Sydney

9. North Melbourne
10. Melbourne
11. Adelaide
12. Port Adelaide
13. Carlton
14. Richmond
15. Gold Coast
16. West Coast
17. Brisbane

I know this is Essendon-ish, but I didn't want to start a new thread...

Noticed the Hun has "time in front" on their ladder.

#1 Collingwood 93%
#2 Essendon 75%
#3 Bulldogs 71%
#4 Hawks 67%
#5 Geelong 64%

Also quarters won.

#1 Collingwood, Geelong 12
#2 Essendon, Hawthorn 11

Fair company we're in there, especially given who we have played and who the other sides have played. Would have loved to be 4 from 4, but if we keep this form up we'll be in the eight every week this year (Can't drop out this week, as Melb, Sydney and WC have the bye, and it's GC next week).

Sort of an non Essendon but also Essendon.

Kepler Bradley , playing well as a forward. Loved the Gerrad Healy comment when he said who would of thought he would be a goal kicking forward.
:rolleyes: maybe anyone who saw him play before he was drafted or anyone who saw him win a B&F at Bendigo playing CHF.

Short memory indeed. Now if only the mad hatter had did not destroy him over here by playing him in the back half ......

Dawks are going to lose. What a shame!

They'll never go close to another flag with their current defence. Rabble.

Hopefully we can do a job on the Gold Coast next week and go ahead of the muppets.

Good win for Geelong. Reckon they're in for a big season, contrary to what many may believe.

Decided to be a bit silly and fill out the predictor on the AFL website. Hopefully didn't jinx us. :p

I know this is only a highlight reel but they either look formidable here or Port were rubbish.

Not to be underestimated.

Cats
Bombers
Dockers
Swans
Saints
Dogs
Hawks

Blues
Crows
Eagles
Lions
