A lot being said about the evenness of the competition - unfortunately the evenness is at the wrong end. There's two wins between 1st and 6th, but two more between 6th and 7th, but before the Ess/GWS game, 2 between 7th and 8th, and then 2 between 8th and 15th.

There have been five games this year where bottom 6 beat top 6 - Suns v Syd, Coll v Melb, Adel v Melb, Haw v Syd, Adel v Geel (and the Haw/Melb draw). But my eye turns to the middle 6 - the ones either just in or just out of the 8. Teams hoping to be contenders.

Just SEVEN games where a middle 6 team beat a top 6 one. All of the other wins from the sides still hoping to make the 8 have been against each other, or against battlers. It's probably rare for a side sitting 7-12 with a month to go to get close to a flag, but all of these teams are frauds.

The gap between last - us - and the teams either just in or just out of the eight is small. The gap between being just in or just out of the eight and a Grand Final is chasm like.
