Usually I like a chuckle at the Tigers' expense, but this is just sad. I remember seeing a piece when he was drafted, and it's awful to think of where he is now. Really hope he gets his life together and that being out of footy helps.

Yeah I relish opportunities to stick my big fat boot into Richmond but this shouldn't be one of them.

HERITIER Lumumba has played his last game at Melbourne as the enigmatic defender launches legal proceedings against his own club.

The 30-year-old is feuding with Melbourne about his concussion management after a series of head knocks saw him fail to play a senior game after Round 5 this year.

As the Herald Sun revealed this month, Lumumba needs to play almost every game next season to activate a trigger clause to play on into 2018.

He believes the club failed to give him adequate medical treatment to allow him to return more quickly from those concussions.

He has hired lawyers to seek compensation or broker a deal from the Demons on his behalf.

Yet Melbourne’s concussion experts cleared Lumumba mid-season from those head knocks and instead are certain he made the decision not to play again this year.

If Lumumba had activated that clause for a fourth year he could have earned $1.8 million in his four years at Melbourne.

Lumumba continues to seek more medical expertise about his concussion management and will be on Melbourne’s list regardless in 2017.

But if he decides to retire in coming months Melbourne could mount a case he should not be paid his 2017 salary.

Melbourne football boss Josh Mahoney told the Herald Sun the club was still working with Lumumba on his return to football.

“We have been very diligent with our concussion management and we are supportive of Heritier gathering more information,’’ he said.

Regardless of those medical opinions there seems no way back for Lumumba at Melbourne.

Even if Lumumba was passed fit he is not in Melbourne’s best 22 given the club’s improved list and his mediocre form at the club.

Melbourne believes it has been as sensitive and cautious as any club in the AFL when it comes to treating players with concussion.

Emerging stars Jack Viney and Angus Brayshaw are just two of a list of players who have had to be managed with head knocks.

The 2010 premiership player left Collingwood after making a series of complaints about the club’s conduct and was part of a three-way trade with Travis Varcoe and Mitch Clark.

He said this year his poor form and interrupted year was in part due to his mourning of the death of Muhammad Ali.

“I’m still mourning the passing of the great Muhammad Ali. I think that is something to note,” Lumumba said.

“That has probably been the most difficult time in this period.”

At the time Lumumba said he was enjoying his time out of football as he eased back from his latest head knock.

“It’s been fantastic, the period not playing. Every negative circumstance in your life is an opportunity to grow,” Lumumba said.

“I feel fantastic. I have an opportunity to contribute to my team playing finals football.”

There's a very strong argument to say that this is the worst trade of all time if the club that snagged Varcoe comes out looking the best.

Edit: Probably the worst three-way since that time I walked in on Zondor and Half Ton Mum in the Victory Room dunnies and HTM pinned me against the cubicle wall and tried to give me a :stern seeing to.

All of them got Varcoe?
I meant, the teams involved considering Mitch Clark was involved in this strange swap.

Although, if the underlying suggestion here is that Collingwood won that trade, that just shows how bad they have been at this whole trade/draft thing.

CARLTON has been dealt a major blow with gun midfielder Patrick Cripps to miss up to 12 weeks with a stress reaction in his back.

The 21-year-old has been back training for nearly a month but felt discomfort in his lower back during training on Wednesday.

He was sent for scans on Thursday, which revealed the injury.

The Blues are hopeful Cripps will be fit in time for the pre-season competition early next year but will likely be cautious with the young star’s recovery.

“While the news is disappointing, the positive is we have diagnosed the condition early, minimising his time on the sidelines,” Carlton football boss Andrew McKay said.

“Given his professionalism and determination, we are confident Patrick will be ready for the 2017 pre-season competition.”

The injury is similar to that suffered by teammate Harry McKay in March this year, which saw the Blues draftee sidelined until late June.

One of the game’s best young midfielders, Cripps has played 44 games for the Blues since being draft at pick No.13 in the 2013 national draft and has already won a club best and fairest.

Launceston the host city for an all-star cricket match between celebrity-stacked AFL teams North Melbourne and Hawthorn

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting will return to his home state to play in a charity cricket game between two Australian Football League (AFL) teams in January.

Ponting will skipper the North Melbourne AFL side during the January 27 Twenty20 clash at the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston, while his Network TEN KFC Big Bash co-commentator Damien Fleming will captain the Hawthorn team.

The match will be live streamed exclusively on cricket.com.au and the CA Live app.

A host of AFL stars will also feature in the contest, including Hawthorn captain Luke Hodge, experienced coach Alastair Clarkson and four-time premiership star Jarryd Roughead.

"We’ve assembled a pretty red-hot squad of players," Fleming said of the Hawthorn squad of 18 that also includes Victoria veteran allrounder John Hastings.

"There’s a great mix of bowling techniques, batting capability and fielding prowess in this squad and I think we are going to have no problems knocking over the Roos."

All proceeds from the game will be distributed by the Ponting Foundation to its cancer and health related projects, a cause particularly close to Roughead following his recent battle with a melanoma issue.

Ponting Foundation Honorary Chief Executive James Henderson expects the entire state of Tasmania to get behind the Twenty20 match, with a crowd in excess of 15,000 expected.

"We are thrilled by ticket sales to date and the announcement of the Hawthorn squad, full of their superstars and best cricketers, is certain to spike the interest in the lead up to Christmas," Henderson said.
