COLLINGWOOD recruit Daniel Wells will not train for 10 days after suffering a slight strain to his calf last week.

The 31-year-old, who signed a three-year deal to join the Magpies during the trade period, played 19 games in 2016 but battled an Achilles problem in 2015 when at North Melbourne.

However, Magpies senior assistant Brenton Sanderson told RSN radio breakfast the injury Wells suffered was minor.

"When you hit 30 they tend to pop up," Sanderson said.

Describing the recruit as a Ferrari because of the class he will add to the Magpies' emerging midfield, Sanderson said the only objective was to have him raring to go at round one.

"[We have to] make sure we get him to round one in really good physical shape," Sanderson said.

Collingwood players missed 208 games due to injury in 2016, however its rate of soft tissue injuries declined compared to previous seasons.

Meanwhile Sanderson said his long-standing friendship with Nathan Buckley and his previous senior coaching experience at Adelaide would help him challenge the coach in a positive sense.

"I will definitely try to challenge him without being abrasive and without trying to damage any sort of relationship," Sanderson said.

"[There will] be times when we argue and have some really heated debate, but that is all part of being in a football department and trying to chase success."

Buckley enters the final year of his contract with a team focused in rising up the ladder.

Sanderson said he was enthused about the talent on the list but said Collingwood needed to become more consistent in certain areas to succeed.

"The cornerstone of Collingwood when they play really good footy is they really do bring the pressure," Sanderson said.

"They have a tackle count of 80 to 100 a game."

How come Melbourne Football Club and Clayton Oliver aren't being splashed all over the pages for his drink driving?

Was the coverage of Kayne Turner's similar indiscretion an example of inconsistent media treatment or caused by our own PR overreaction?

Ditto Majak going to a nightclub when recovering from injury. Managed to get front page with no alcohol or DUI even alleged.

With the money the AFL has pumped into that club outside the normal allowances they are keen to protect their investment.

The Western Bulldogs have posted a record profit on the back of winning the 2016 premiership
WESTERN Bulldogs’ drought-breaking premiership season has been crowned by a record $3.64 million operating profit.

Only a $1.9m write-down from the club’s failed Edgwater pokies venture took the gloss off an otherwise perfect year at Whitten Oval.

The Dogs’ fairytale 2016 netted an AFL premiership, the VFL premiership, the women’s competition Hampson-Hardeman Cup and an inaugural licence in the AFLW starting next year.

Profits under the Peter Gordon-led Bulldogs board are set to soar again next year thanks to a new stadium deal at the AFL-owned Etihad Stadium and the staging of a home game against Port Adelaide in Ballarat in August.

The club yesterday said a $1.9m impairment charge against the value of gaming entitlements acquired in 2009 at Edgewater had resulted in a statutory profit of $1.77m.

Total revenues climbed from $41.3m to $48.4m and net debt was slashed from $8.3m to $1.9m.

“We’re really proud of the progress our club has made over the past few years, in all areas both on and off the field,” chief executive Gary Kent said.

“Winning the 2016 AFL premiership was a significant contributor to our financial results, but we are also pleased that the club’s underlying business showed strong growth with commercial partnerships, membership, merchandise, fundraising and hospitality venues all performing strongly throughout the whole year.”

Kent also paid tribute to retiring Bulldogs vice-president Susan Alberti, a pioneer of the women’s league and club benefactor.

Membership hit a record 40,081 and is on track to be smashed again as the club embarks on its flag defence.

The Bulldogs will play two home games in Ballarat from 2018.

They've gone early:

Western Bulldogs post New Year’s Eve social media messages three weeks too early

THE Western Bulldogs haven’t made too many mistakes in 2016.

However, the club’s social media team might be a bit red faced after posting New Year’s Eve messages 23 days early.

The posts wish Bulldogs fans a happy new year and thank them for their support in 2016

The Bulldogs have every right to celebrate the year after breaking their 62-year premiership drought in September

However, it was a little premature.

There were some bemused and confused fans with responses ranging from the polite to the humorously sarcastic.

Western Bulldogs Facebook post.

A selection of Facebook responses.
Not only did the Bulldogs snare their first AFL premiership since 1954, Footscray won the VFL premiership while the club’s women’s team defeated Melbourne in the final Hampson-Hardeman Cup match.

The Bulldogs are also celebrating the biggest profit in club history after announcing a record $3.64 million operating profit.

After a long — and at times fairytale — season we’ll forgive them this little slip-up.

"So Ross, with the ever increasing number of player misdemeanors this off season, is there a growing culture problem at the club under your stewardship?"
