What was the AFL TV coverage like in 2001 and before?

In Queensland it was pretty shit. I watched a bit of AFL in Cairns in 2000. Lions games, being mainly on Saturday nights, were shown at 10pm or later. Often they started around midnight. I don't think every game was shown live (or close to) until 2002, when Nine and Ten got the AFL rights. I can't speak to the actual quality of the broadcasts much, but I recall Channels Nine and Ten getting the rights seemed like a huge jump ahead - all of a sudden they were developing the broadcasts instead of taking it for granted. It's being getting better ever since, with the exception of some of the commentators (I miss a lot of the Channel 10 commentators).

Ten's coverage before Lachlan Murdoch took over them was the best :hearts::footy:

Were afternoon games shown live or near live?

What was nice back in the 90s was going to the Gabba on a Saturday night and coming back early enough to watch most of the replay. Had to hope most of the interesting match highlights were not in the first quarter though.

Afternoon games were live, or close enough to it to not make a difference. I was almost a Bulldogs supporter because they were the only team I could reliably see back then - they played plenty of Sunday arvo games.

Haha, you are not the only one......I had to ask a couple of months ago, I had no idea!!:p

It could also stand for Extremely ****ing Aggravating which describes how it feels when someone EFAs one of your posts. :p

I think this SMS conversation applies here.

Can't remember, wasn't that big a follower until I moved to Brisbane in 2000 and got dragged to a few games.

Rookie rules :
There's a 4 year rookie rule but does that only apply to one club? i.e. if McKeever (for example) were to be traded to another club does he HAVE to be put on the main list or could he be traded and put on the rookie list for another 4 years?

Trading rules recently allowed for rookies to be exchanged, but they have to be placed on a senior list at the new club. If a player were to be delisted, then I think they can restart their rookie eligibility at another club.

I know it's old news now, but I thinking about how the Lions paid out Fevola's contract early.
WHY???

Did they have to "borrow" from this years salary cap to pay the contract out last year?

I would have thought that it would be beneficial to defer some of last years financial costs to this year.

They did. Part of the payout went into 2011 and part went into 2012. Next year we'll no longer have that against our salary cap so can afford to go after Tippett.
