The move saw Buckley move to the Magpies in exchange for Craig Starcevich, Troy Lehmann and the Magpies' first-round draft pick (no. 12, future double-premiership player Chris Scott). WIKI.

Considering that he wanted to leave, we did OK out of this....

Lost- Nathan Buckley & Pick 39

Gained - Craig Starcevich, Troy Lehmann and Pick 12 (Chris Scott)

You could argue if we did not get Chris, we would not have gotten Brad later on at the end of 1997.

Starcevich and Lehmann played 33 games between them for us, Chris Scott played 194 and if you want to add Brad's 146 games then we got a total of 373 games.


Collingwood got 70 games out of Jason Wild (pick 39) and 260 from Buckley. Total 330.

Interesting draft fact I was unaware of is that when the Bears traded for Lynchy, they gave up pick 7 in the draft Fitzroy used to pick Chris Johnson.

Officially we got picks 3 & 19 for Headland, which turned into Brennan and Troy Selwood.

Unofficially, from memory the trade hinged on a series of trades with Essendon and Freo including us giving up pick 15 and Cupido and getting Caracella.

unless I'm mistaken, we effectively swapped Corrie for Rockliff -

We traded Corrie to Collingwood for pick 93, which shortened to pick 82 in the national draft, which we didn't use, which gave us pick 5 in the pre-season draft, which was used to select Rockliff . . .

It looks like Rockliff owes us at least 53 games and 48 goals over the next five years to break even.

Any takers?

I'm pretty hopeful too, and in reality he only has to equal Corrie's career with Collingwood to pay us back.

Shouldn't be too difficult.

Your first post confused me but the above quote is spot on.

In my reckoning, we are already ahead. Corrie's games in the seniors at Collingwood have not really set the world on fire

OK - here is my numpty question and apologies if it has been asked before... I am not that new to footy but it was a steep learning curve - I was the cretinous Rugby Union fan that you heard screaming "knock-on knock on!" every time they hand-balled forward when I first started to follow the game so I am not doing too badly...

Here is the question: what is the definition of the term "Key Position Player" that I hear bandied about so much? I have always assumed that it referes to players who are groomed for very specific roles... forward and ruckman leap to mind... but not to those who are able to rove around the ground and play a number of roles... is this correct???

"Key positions" are considered to be Full Back, Centre Half Back, Centre Half Forward and Full Forward. It is a term used to denote the key importance of these positions traditionally played in successful teams. Exceptional players in these positions can be the difference between winning and losing.

For example, we had Mal Michael, Justin Leppitsch, Jonathan Brown and Alistair Lynch in the above positions with Bradshaw filling in at CHF and CHB when needed. I think that most would agree that these players were instrumental in the 3-peat filling the key positions.

Also, Geelong only weakness (other than kicking points!) is a lack of quality key position players (Mooney, Scarlett and Harley (?)) but their midfield and teamwork more than makes up for it.
