Foo Fighters? Red Hot Chili Peppers? There's some pretty decent bands out there.
Chillis I'd have more as a 90s and 00s defining band, same for Foos.

I'd say both of those peaked in the 90s. BSSM and Californication are easily the Peppers' best (IMO obviously) but have been pretty average since By the Way. I liked the Foos' first couple of albums but I think they've been mostly bland since. My opinion of course.

Yeah sorry I was thinking great bands still putting out records. Also I think WR was suggesting there hadn't been good music since the 70s/80s and they were both definitely post-that.

The main thing I'm taking out of this is that we need to post the best music from the past 15 years

Does it specifically have to be bands, or can it be anything?
I'm obviously going to say this but Arctic Monkeys will definitely go down as one of THE defining bands of the 00's-10's.

You know, the weird thing is, every time I hear Arctic Monkeys, I think of this:

The bigger problem... I can't name a single song from there. Maybe I have heard of the song without knowing who sung it, but perhaps just for those that have cotton wool in their ears, can we get the best songs by the Monkees? (That was on purpose)

The current theme song of The Hooligan Report!

Surely you know "I Bet You Look Good on the Dancefloor" "R U Mine" "Do I Wanna Know" etc.?

I like the Beatles but do you think they would excel in this day and age? Many of those bands were able to create entirely new and interesting things at a time when they weren't really around. It's much harder in the modern era to truly create something unique and different, which is probably why you see all that crap EDM because people are using tools that make it easier to create a sound.
You cant really take out the Beatles and bring them forward because that negates everyone that came after them. 90% of all bands are pretty much influenced by the Beatles.

Oasis is an obvious one. A great band and one of my all time favourites but they wouldnt exist if the Beatles didnt come along first.

The problem with music today is that it's all kinda been done. There are only so many chords.

It's actually really funny people bagging 1D in here when they're literally a 21st Century Beatles.
That's the worst thing you've ever said. EVER.

I only managed to type the above sentence after about 20 minutes of uncontrollable laughter.

What's that?

Speaking of shit EDM, Calvin Harris' "this is what you came for" just kills my soul, it's so bad. Taylor Swift shouldn't have even admitted to partly writing it

Sia's one of the few who can do great electropop
Calvin Harris, David Guetta, Aviici et al are just horrid. There is absolutely no rhythm or melody to their songs, they just get some big-name pop star to sing some verses and the "hook" (if you can call it that) is just 20 seconds of noise. I don't understand how anyone can dance or groove to it in anyone, it's just there taking up space. There are no variety in their songs either, it literally all sounds the same but people just keep buying it.

Yeah, I was just making a point though. That if they released what they did then today, that WR and others would think it's mediocre music. Was just trying to put a perspective on it. I like the Beatles but i don't go nuts for them.

Is it? Didn't know that at all (then again, I wouldn't be able to recognise it for the life of me.) Bring back Kasabian for THR! It's all obvious where the success truly came from!

I was going to say "Isn't that last one a Franz Ferdinand song?" But nope... that's not it. The song I mentioned is a FF song, but the one you've mentioned... in fact, all of them... I don't recognise them at all.

It's weird, I certainly have heard of the Monkees In An Onsen, but I couldn't tell you one song, how any of their music goes, or could even name a band member from there. It's kinda like... hmm, like a common person's view of Pakistan. People certainly know of it, and the know they are Muslim, but they wouldn't really know anything else about them, like their capital city, or anyone famous (I guess this is more US, since I think a fair bit of Aussies could name at least one Pakistani) or even their language.

It's just... yeah.

If I want dance music today, I look no further than Daft Punk.

Keep reading and you'll see what I meant.

Or are you trying to say The Beatles didn't start as a boy band?

I read on but they are nothing alike. The only thing that is similar is that they are both young men and both are really popular.

That's it.

You don't think The Beatles were a boy band to begin with?

Ok.

Well they were a band and they were pretty much boys.

Boy band is viewed as completely different in today's world as to what it was back then.

For some reason the term boy band now means a bunch of talentless young men who dance about while other people write and play all the music. Examples are Backstreet Boys, N'SYNC, One Direction, FIVE, New Kids on the Block etc and so on.

The Beatles are not a boyband.

The Beatles are a rocknroll band and the greatest band of all time.

You don't think "I Wanna Hold Your Hand" "Love Me Do" etc. were poppy love songs that are typical of any boy band these days? Ok. Each to their own.

I would consider The Beatles to be a boy band at the start. They were a group of young males who had a huge fan girl base, commercial success, and sang simple love songs. To me, that constitutes a boy band even though that term refers to the likes of 1D, Backstreet Boyd and NSYNC these days. The only difference is that The Beatles a) had talent, b) played instruments and c) wrote their own songs.

You mean those two pop songs written by the band and all the musical instruments played in both songs played by all the band members. Cos it's a band.
