Also think saying it can't be compared to "the movies" is a strange way of putting it... It's a movie as well.
But it doesn't have a sith/Jedi etc.

As I said, it's a movie for the extras in the universe, not the main players. Vader makes a good cameo but that's about it.

If you appreciate it for what it is, it was very good. Just don't think it gets anywhere near the original trilogy for me.

Definitely better than 1 though. Everything is better than 1.

If you were unaware of the previous films and watched this as the first one then you probably wouldn't. I daresay most would have known it was given the actor that played Tarkin would have died between now and ANH.
He died in 94. Which totally skipped my mind until after I got out of the cinema haha. Don't know why I assumed the guy hadn't aged for 40 years hahaha

Oh it was definitely original. I just don't think it can be compared to the movies. No sith, no Jedi etc etc. It's a story for the extras in the universe. Which is fine, but that's why I don't think it can be compared to the movies. As a stand alone, I thought it was pretty good.

I think it was more the pun. They did such a good job of making him bad ass and then he comes out with puns? Haha come on!

I might need to rewatch but didn't even think he was CGI until I listened to a podcast on the way home (although it obviously makes sense now haha). Thought the other one looked obviously fake. Think either way, the industry still has some work to do with life size CGI.
I have a suspicion we might see a "special edition" in 10 years when the effects catch up haha. It would have been hard to do the movie otherwise I think, you almost need to have both of those characters.

You keep saying it doesn't have a sith.. What's Vader? Haha. There's also no jedi or sith in VII, until Luke pops up at the end.

The OT is barely about the Jedi and Sith. The overarching story is the Rebellion against the Empire. Rogue One is the story of how the Rebellion was able to achieve its first major victory.

What makes these guys not main players? They absolutely are. They managed to get the plans for the Death Star! That's massive!

The prequel trilogy was almost entirely about Jedi and Sith.

You reckon you needed both of them? Reckon you almost could have got away with having neither.

Loved how highly Vader apparently rated Tarkin though haha. ****ing hate the actor that played that other douche.

Vader would be lucky to have 5 mins of screen time haha.

Yeah agreed with 7 but then that's just above 1 for me in my ratings of them.

Disagree entirely. Not having tarkin on the death star right before IV would have underlined that this isn't really part of the story. He's the commander of the station.

The other character just helps to streamline to the start of IV, again would have felt weird not ending that way.

You didn't like Mendelssohn? As in you don't like his actor or thought the character was crap?

OT?

They're not main players because they were put together for one flick with no option of them ever making it past one film. They literally put them in as a filler between 3 and 4.

It was a good movie but it wasn't necessary that it was made. That's why I don't rate it in comparison to the other ones.

Yeah fair enough. I love Tarkin so wasn't upset.

Can see the reason for the other character as well. Tied it all together nicely I guess.

Also gonna throw it out there: Return of the Jedi is a piece of shit. Second worst of the series.
I don't dislike it that much but definitely below IV and V

In terms of the universe now though, they are definitely main players. Significantly so.

And of course it wasn't necessary. Neither were the prequels, neither was 7.

Well that's outrageous!
Ewoks are the ****ing worst. They didn't need at all to be in that movie. They completely take me out of the importance of what happens on Endor.

I see what you're saying, I just don't see them that way.

The prequels kind of were. When you start a series with movies 4/5/6, it suggests 1/2/3 will arrive at some point.

I think A New Hope is very overrated.
I'm with you, rather meh to me, not one I'd watch over and over.
Empire much better and probably the best, did enjoy Jedi more than I think others would have.
