Childish Gambino album first thoughts

Me and Your Mama: very different but not that bad
Have Some Love: too different not a fan at all
Boogieman: again quite different way too 80s sounding
Zombies: sounds quite 80s but don’t mind this one
Riot: still too 80s but getting better
Redbone: not a fan
California: best one yet but still not really liking it that much
Terrified: what I am currently, going into each new track!
Baby Boy: best track for sure, says more about the rest rather than how good this one is
The Night me and Your Mama Met: thankfully only 3-4 mins to go after this ordinary song finishes
Stand Tall: everything this album won’t do

I know the guy is a genius but think he has been a bit too smart for his own good. Unless he is working on going back in time and dropping this album in 1983 or his target audience is to be a soundtrack for the adult film industry this is a massive fail
The two tracks ive heard are Me and Your Mama and Redbone.

Just on Gambino, I take you love his earlier stuff? Camp and Because of the Internet etc?

Yeah really like his other stuff. This is just too different. Comes across as him showing off just how diverse and talented he can be. But for me the whole 80s thing doesn't appeal at all

I want to change my voting - I no longer want to have a beer with you.
No idea why but my earlier message didn't properly quote..

Just something about that era doesn't do it for me. Not all bands/artists (big Queen fan for example) but a lot of artists many would consider legends (Prince, Bowie, Billy Joel, Blondie, Bruce Springsteen and to a lesser extent INXS and Crowded House) 90% of their stuff id want to skip if it came on a playlist I was listening to

I'm not missing it, I just completely disagree with it.

I agree.

Maeve hacking her own system and slashing a tech's throat to get what she wants is in no way comparable to Ford unleashing anarchy on the park. That it was Ford who did this was a shock too as we'd been led to believe that it was Arnold who was looking to free the hosts from Ford

I can see how this album has really divided opinion. A lot of people who were big fans of his previous work seem to hate it while a lot of others (myself included) really like it. I can understand it because of artists I've loved who have put out albums that are quite different to their usual 'style' that I haven't liked, mainly because I was just hoping for more of the same (De La Soul's new album for example).

For me I was previously never really caught up by Gambino (as previously mentioned I think there have only been a handful of rap/hip hop albums I've liked in the last 10 years or so) so I've come to it with a clean slate, and really like the album in isolation. I like the fact that it recreates some older styles of music without bastardising them which a lot of modern artists do (ie: just adding a modern electronic beat to an old sample or riff), and reminds me of some of the better music that came out of the 70s and 80's rather than the mainstream stuff which was on the whole a bit shit. For example the psychedelic guitar/funk sound reminds me a lot of Parliament/Funkadelic, particularly tracks like Boogieman and Riot.

They didn't show human death but that was the implication. I guess you could believe that the humans just walked out of there but it's certainly not what I got from it.

Clearly I missed something then, the final scene barely resonated with me at all. Especially because I was left thinking that there were basically no main characters left for the next season if Billy was dead, but apparently he's coming back. The nameless extras at the party didn't really matter to me if they're dead or alive. It'd be like if the Red Wedding in GoT had been just random peasants.

It was more than random peasants, that scene meant to me that anyone who was high up at the Delos company was probably killed, which was Ford's way of protecting (?) the park and the hosts from whatever they were planning to do to them.

Cruyff14 not a fan of Bruce I see. Surely that's a friendship breaker!

Unfriend, unfriend!!

Fair enough, I'm gonna check the whole album hopefully this weekend.

What are some of your favourite older tracks from Gambino?

Have you not listened to Camp?

Varies on what I feel like listening to at the time, at different times I'd have said any one of Outside, Bonfire, That Power & even Heartbeat were my favourite off Camp. His EP is pretty good too. Even though I liked Because the Internet none of the songs that much in comparison to those earlier ones.

The strange thing is i'm not really a massive rap/hip-hop fan at all but really found myself liking multiple tracks & a whole album of his so it's fair to say this new album has really disappointed me

Yeah, 'Because the Internet" too, I don't mind them but they aren't the kind of thing I listen to and think "this is amazing" and want to listen to them over and over. The only rapper that's done that for me in recent memory is Joey Badass.

I love L.E.S. too and Firefly. I love that whole album thought. Im a big fan of all of Gambino's stuff though but Camp would be my favourite and what I listen to most.

Throwing it out there but 80s to me is by far the worst decade of music!
It depends. Some of it was very out there, other has the very 80s sound, some of it is just plain crap, but some stuff is very good.

Had the best chart music along with the 60's. Went to shit towards the end of the decade though. We had all of that SA&W crap and couldn't move for Kylie and Jason.

The 80's were better than any decade that's come after it imo.

90s had brilliant music, can't agree at all.

Oasis, Nirvana, Offspring, etc.?
90's was pretty dreadful though trust me I remember it well. A few decent grunge, Brit-pop and dance acts didn't really compensate for the utter dirge that was 95% of the rest of the stuff

Depends on the genre you are basing it on. Too simple to say one decade was better than any other for music in general.
