Mints worked a treat. Surprised myself by not feeling anxious at all on the day. Waiting on the altar was pretty nerve-wracking, but that was immediately followed by the most beautiful 30 minutes of my life to date.

Thanks a bunch for your help, good sir.

Fantastic mate! Great to hear. I'll let my wife know it worked out.

Settings for restrictions over the last 2 weeks not even close to getting the job done in western Sydney. It’ll be another week or 2 before we see whether the revised and slightly stricter restrictions announced on Friday have an effect, and whether NSW learned anything from Victoria last year with regards to outbreak response in lower SES and multicultural communities.

Yeah SW Sydney seems very anti-lockdown. Right wing religious groups down there.

I'd be surprised if they were maliciously not complying at any greater rate than we see in wealthier parts of the city.

It shouldn’t be a surprise that a different approach is required in the west vs the east/north of the city.

Getting this wrong was why the Melbourne outbreak became so big in the first place, getting it right was how they eventually got it under control.

We know there are a number of real factors which influence a person's ability/willingness to comply with public health directions.
  • Job type (more 'essential' workers, less office types able to work from home)
  • Rapid access to financial supports when isolating
  • Living situations - larger families all under one roof
  • Culture, language, education
  • Complexity of comms. Even I lose track of the vast number of exposure sites and exemptions for individuals/businesses. The rules need to be clear and simple.
  • Trust in government institutions
  • Buy in from community leaders
If you want cooperation from these communities and a quick resolution to this situation you need to address all of these.

NSW and Federal govts need to step up and show leadership on this, fast. It can't be left to individuals.

Dunno, I have 'friends' who live in that area who are chafing at the restrictions already.

I don’t doubt that there are some who will wilfully disobey these directives with no good reason. I’m just saying I doubt that’s more prevalent in the west than in the rest of the city.

I have a friend in Bondi who is visiting her partner in Manly and vice versa.

Harvey Norman and other retailers are still open.

All permitted under current exemptions to the stay at home order.

Yet we expect an ESL Afghan woman in Fairfield to understand that they can do that but she can’t visit her sister who lives 2 blocks away. I barely understand that distinction!

This is why overly complex and nuanced restrictions applied to some postcodes/communities but not others didn’t work in Melbourne, and they won’t work here.

Eh, it's more an issue in areas with big family groups though because it spreads much quicker house hold to household. If I'm wilfully disobeying, I'm going to visit my single mother in her house in Cremorne. If people in those communities disobey, they're spreading it to large groups of people.

Epidemiologically that makes sense, but should we have different rules based on how big your household is? What’s the threshold? How do you enforce that?

Got my text for my first Pfizer dose on Saturday next week. Annoying because everyone else has got to take time off work to get theirs and I'm meant to be going out for drinks after footy to. Awkward time of 5:25pm and I have women's to coach at 2:30.

What sport are you coaching the women? God help them if you are coaching soccer! Reading your comments it's like you've never played the game.

What happens if you miss your scheduled dose?

I think you go to the back of the queue. I'm one of two coaches, one of the girls who is from Aus has played a bit before and could run the bench in the last quarter if need be, but we should be done by 4... Hardest thing usually is getting the girls going - it's like herding cats.

Aussie Rules of course. If I was coaching soccer I'd have won England the Euro's

How long is the delay if you go back to the back of the queue?

Probably a couple of weeks. I could request a new appointment but not going to. I've waited long enough, I'll just go and not drink and go straight from the game. Luckily the game is in Dublin this week.
