Because he will be passed out drunk like most weeks?
No doubt.

Just as a side note, I'm ****ing sick of the umpires. Twice in two weeks those bastards have impacted our games against with ridiculous decisions.

You saying that's better or worse or not funny? They obviously wouldn't have those silences if there was no canned laughter, but still think it's pretty funny haha.

It's not funny.

Did you know the shows are actually recorded with large pauses between dialogue so the laughing can be added in?

If you watched it being recorded live that's exactly how it would sound.

I was listening to on MMM it at work in London and even that flog Garry Lyon was saying he felt we got robbed by a couple of decisions and he is as anti-Carlton as Robbo & Caro most the time. The centre bounce one and the Menzel non-free at the end. I'm sure I won't find highlights showing the bounce and I'd have to endure watching the whole last 2mins on the AFL website to see the Menzel one so I'm just taking his word for it! Definitely born in the wrong era with my 2 sports teams!

Yep unbelievable.

In the last two weeks, the following commentators have said that we've been given the really raw end of the deal:

Dunstall
Lynch
Mooney
Harley
Mcavaney
Lyon.

I'm so sick of this shit. Somebody has to be held accountable for this.

Just skipped my way through and saw it. It's a free kick for over the shoulder and was pretty reckless and dangerous by Rivers. The only thing that saved him/cost us is how poorly positioned the umpire is. He had too many players in his way to see it which shouldn't be the case.

I think it's pretty funny, the pauses just make the jokes awkward.

It would be better if it wasnt for the pauses. Canned laughter just means that your jokes arent funny enough to be said without a laughing track. It's like they are telling you when to laugh. I HATE IT. Community for instance doesnt have a laugh track and it doesnt need it because you are laughing all the time on your own.

Don't necessarily agree. You're basically suggesting the only reason people find Friends, HIMYM, Sienfeld etc. funny is because of the canned laughter which is blatantly not true. Canned laughter was just a technique generally attached to comedies for whatever reason.

A good example: do you not enjoy stand up comedy because of the constant laughter in the back ground?

A lot of sitcoms were filmed in front of live studio audiences, for example Friends.

Of course I enjoy stand up comics. The constant laughter in the background doesnt take away form the performance, it adds to it because the comic is making everyone laugh.

It's human nature. For example if you have had a couple of drinks, you're watching Anchorman with 6 of your best mates. You are all laughing and getting into it, all of your 5 mates are laughing, you join in. Whether or not you really find it funny or not, or only slightly funny, it is then made to be funnier by everyone else laughing.

That is why shows put on canned laughter. To make the masses laugh because... oh all those people are laughing it must be funny etc.

But my point is it's the exact same with stand up comedy. A lot of sitcoms are/were filmed in front of live audiences, so it was basically just a stand up comic show with actors.

And with more recent shows like HIMYM, as I already said, a lot of people I know don't even notice the canned laughter and laugh when they find things funny.

Well all im saying is that I find shows funnier without the canned laughter. But then I dont find sitcoms funny. Friends, Fraisier, HIMYM, Modern Family etc

Shows like that IMO are really average.

Whereas the show I do like tend to not have any canned laughter like The Inbetweeners, The Office, The Simpsons, Community. The only show I can think of that does have canned laughter was Seinfeld but that show is against the norm. That standout, because it is so unbelievably brilliant. A show about nothing. Genius.

Historically no.

It's been statistically proven that people will laugh when others do. Canned laughter was brought in to elicit a response from the viewers and when the added laughter was dropped from the shows, the rating plummeted.

How can you say that's funny? It's the laughter that lets you know its supposed to be a comedic situation.

Others? Or the masses?

If I don't think something is funny, I won't laugh.

People in general are more likely to follow the reaction of others (Not always).

I'm the same, I won't laugh at something that isn't funny. That's why the laughing track shits me to tears.

I don't mind the canned laughter. But often I ask myself why they are laughing, it's not even funny.

I mean, I love Friends, but there are times when I don't understand why the audience is laughing.
This, I generally don't mind the laughter but when it is added to something that isn't funny it just makes you cringe.

Also the shows that don't use it tend to utilise the silence with comedic pauses and facial expressions etc, you can do office/peep show style cringe comedy with canned laughter over the top of it. The silences/facial expressions and little background comments in Arrested Development you wouldn't notice with canned laughter added are what makes it great.

Yeah agreed. If it's not funny I don't laugh, the canned laughter has very little impact on whether I find a joke funny.
