Really strange decision, especially because they already have Leuenberger.
Yes and no. Longer played 12 games in his first two seasons which is pretty normal for a ruckman. Surely he couldn't have been that badly starved of opportunities? Makes you wonder about Ben Hudson though.

Edit: 9 games in his first two seasons.

I remember our recruiters saying that they always take the best available player at their pick, regardless of immediate needs. Though I think this approach works best when young players will are loyal to the clubs that draft them.

I know I'd be dark if we had a Top 10 pick and used it on a player that will have a limited impact.

I think the issue was more so Leuwy was still a young buck (ruck) himself when Longer was drafted.

I don't have a problem with drafting a young ruckman with an eye on the future. (Wouldn't surprise me if we grabbed another Mabon type to be ready in 2-3 years) but I think Longer and Leuwy werent that far apart age and development wise

Luenberger is five years older than Longer. That would be a major black mark against the Lions if a ruckman from 2011 was as developed as one from 2006.

I think it was a fair decision to draft Longer and it is their problems behind the scenes causing the exodus now. Just consider how many of Port's younger players left when they were in strife. Hardly any.

The real mystery is what we're going to do with 26. As stated earlier, if we get Dal, using it on a best 22 that could come straight in and make an impact would be the way to go. But we haven't been 'strongly linked' , or even 'rumoured' to anyone decent that fits the bill.

With all the coaching appointments, and now NDS, I'm sure they would be strengthening the 22 even further if they can. Shame the rest of the league is showing little to interest in our blokes like wright Levi and Adams, if what we here is true.

Surely GoDees would love a 39 touch a game Pig in their trenches? Surely.

I'm hearing that Dal is over the line (apparently will be announced later today), we're working on another biggish trade with 26, we think we can get Garlett with 3rd round but we're trying to upgrade slightly as part of Delaney trade (Pelican likely to shit on this idea). Still open to 3rd rounders for a few fringe players and we've got an eye on a state league KPD for depth. Other than that we let Brewis do his magic with a couple of 3rd and 4th rounders :taps side of nose with index finger

Not really their fault, he could hardly get on the park in the first three years so even though there was 5 years age between them, the fact that Leuwy spent 3 years in the doldrums and Longer was up and about in his first year made their development even closer.

Anyway, hindsight and all that...

**** this pelican and **** this medical clause in Dal's contract. I'm convinced we could've worked some Delaney magic otherwise.
Ah well, hopefully the good news keeps flowin.
Not sure anyone can say anything on Garlett with certainty though, but you seem to have heard something.

"Apparently" in order to agree to FA, Pelican Shit is demanding we agree to trade Del for a 4th rounder. We're saying pick 22 compo is enough for Dal so it's a 3rd rounder for Del or we'll sell him to Brissie.

If you're correct then I 100% endorse the club's approach to this.

So much for wanting to keep the Delaney and Dal trades separate Pelch.

Luke Delaney's tough call

It’s been a tough few weeks for Luke Delaney. The key defender made a decision to seek opportunities elsewhere to ply his trade and leave the Kangaroos at the end of the home and away season.

“North put a really good offer to me, but at the end of the day, I had to weigh up what was best for my future and playing career,” Delaney explained to NMFC.com.au.

The 24-year-old said he grappled with the thought of wearing another team’s colours, but had to bite the bullet.

“It's a tough thing to even contemplate. I didn’t want to leave North and the hardest thing will be to leave all my friends and everyone at the club. North gave me the opportunity to play AFL and ideally, I would have loved to have stayed.

“At the age I’m at, I just needed to consider my options and find a club that would be able to provide more opportunity. North is blessed with some great key defenders and they are in front of me at the minute. It’s a really hard team to break into which I completely understand but I can’t afford to wait any longer.”

Making things even more difficult for Delaney was having to leave his brother Cam at the Kangaroos and wave goodbye to the dream of playing more games together in the future.

“When I got drafted to North and then Cam came across too, it was unbelievable and I couldn’t have hoped for a better scenario. It’s really hard to let go of that dream of playing together week-in, week-out, but that’s footy I suppose. You never know what’s around the corner.

“I spoke to Brad (Scott) about my situation and he understood where I was at and I’m glad I’m leaving with the club’s blessing but it’s still tough.”

Delaney has nominated St Kilda as his preferred club and if all goes well, he should become a Saint for 2014 and beyond.

“I met with St Kilda and several other clubs just to get an understanding of my position. Scott Watters and the team there were fantastic and honest about where their club is at and how they saw me fitting in.

“It sounded like they genuinely wanted me there and they gave me a really good vibe and understanding of my future, if it was to be with them.”

Originally taken in the 2009 Rookie Draft and promoted to the senior list in 2011, Delaney played 26 games for the Roos.

“I really hope the North fans understand that I love this club and that it was tough call to have to leave. I know North’s on the right path which makes this decision even harder, but as I said, I just had to make a tough decision for my future.

“I have been here for five years and have been in and out of the team. I didn’t want to be here in another 12 months faced with the same dilemma of not getting regular games when I know I have the ability to play regular AFL footy.”
I personally wish Luke nothing but the best of luck with his career.

Edit: Nice article too. Well done to Heath for sending Keys off in a good light.

I have no doubt the club will get him to the Saints, where he is most likely to be best 22 and I believe has been offered a 3 year contract. Probably wouldn't end up playing half as many games at Carlton or Brisbane.

agree best of luck to him... Is it a bit of Chris Daw's about it though? Leave for more opportunities instead of working really hard to push himself into the starting 22? He will play majority of games with saints bc they are lacking KPD

If St Kilda eventually agrees, then yes. But if we missed out on our key off season target, because of Delaney's price, I would be furious. Delaney is a VFL standard player, and whether he delivers us pick 37 or pick 55 or even pick 73, doesn't make a great deal of difference to me, as long as we keep pick 26!
I think getting NDS for nothing is a key and if we can achieve that, it's a major win from my point of view.

Of course St Kilda won't give up pick 37 for Delaney, given he's uncontracted, and they have pick 3 in the PSD. I doubt the delay would be over this issue anyway, to be honest. If it was, we'd agree to release Delaney for nothing, and get Nick for nothing.

Blokes full of shit. No such thing as good will with him and we should be approaching this as such.
Totally agree. Why would he even think of arguing with the AFL over a compensation pick? Compensation picks as far as I know are automatically given by the AFL.

He will be captain-coach at Brisbane next year the way things are going up there.
