Does it mean he's forgone his free agent status though?
I'm not sure. My understanding was if he and the club agree he can become a FA regardless of whether he exercised the clause - he would have done so as security given it's worth $600K.

Good question though, as it means if it is binding, do we have to pay him that next year? You'd think St Kilda wouldn't want to be paying part of his contract.

That is interesting. Does that require St. Kilda to sign off too? Does that mean we need to trade?

Maybe NDS really does want to stay and has taken FA off the table to remove that as a course of action for the Saints given they may have received a better pick than what any deal with North can bring?

NDS's agent was on the radio this morning and it indicated that if both parties agree, NDS can be a free agent. North's offer would obviously be close to the St Kilda mark, but also a bit longer ( 2 or 3 years).

If NDS leaves, it will be as a free agent, due to St Kilda getting a better compensation and Delaney for nothing.

In effect, we agree to give them Delaney for nothing (something, like a late pick?) and in return NDS is a free agent?

Are we saying here that the Saints will make it a condition of releasing NDS as a free agent that we give Delaney for cheap?

Considering the number of clubs that have enquired I was hoping we'd land a second round pick for him. :(

Would have to be a tough choice for Nicky Dal. Be a one club player or head off for potential success.
Not an easy decision to leave a club you've been at for 10+ years.
And he clearly wants them to get something out of it if he does leave.

But you need to consider the alternative. If NDS isn't a free agent, we'd have to trade for him, and a second round pick would be the least we'd have to pay. It works out.

I see what you mean. Still, NDS for nothing + a second round pick for Delaney makes me happy on the inside. A man can dream.

tough choice but the saints are not bending backwards to keep him either and reading today's herald sun they are thinking of trading Montagna if the right deal came up.

so Aylett, Holyoak and Joseph waited for the 10 year rule to be formalised before deciding to speak with Davis, Wade and Rantall and one or two others, I think not. now (if it is not too late) is when we should be sawing some seeds with potential FAs for next year.
For sure we have to. I am just saying from our point of view as supporters, it's too early to discuss the 2014 FA names, as we don't even know which of them will still be free agents come the start of the year, let alone the end. That's not to say the club shouldn't have a quick chat to their managers.

I think it is almost certain that he'll be leaving St Kilda. He may not even have such a strong drive to chase a Premiership elsewhere, and if St Kilda really wanted to keep him, it looks like he would knock back all offers to stay. But given that they seem to be pretty happy for him to leave, he will almost have no choice. And given that our offer should be comparable, there is no reason for him to stay if he isn't really wanted.
