this baseline-gate thing is stupid. these guys play in summer league games, rucker park, other outdoor events. there are people lining the courtside, metal wire fences etc. its a freak accident.
He's not the first and won't be the last to run into that padding. I'm not saying I'm right, I'm just saying peoples natural reaction is to blame a third party rather than accept that the human body is not a flawless machine.
We saw Kevin Ware do the exact same thing last year with no impact required except for the hardwood itself. This could have been the exact same scenario.
My emergency nurse source says breaking the skin significantly increases the risk of infection and also means surgery must happen quicker which can cause soft tissue complications (whereas if the skin isn't broken they can do a closed reduction and wait for swelling to decrease before surgery)
