Found a fun checkmate in a daily game today - as soon as I played Bd3 I knew it was an error, but fortunately a very odd h5 blunder set up a very fun Queen sac mate.

Carlsen decides not to defend title; it’s Nepo v Ding:

As stated in a comment on a youtube video on this topic:
"You’ll have a weird situation whereby the “world chess champion” is not only not the best in the world, but is CLEARLY not the best. If that doesn’t devalue the title I don’t know what will."

Having said that based on how badly Nepomniachtchi performed last year one can't blame Magnus for refusing to play him again.

As someone who doesn't keep a close eye on the competitive scene, can anyone explain to me the downside for Magnus in defending?

He’s not interested in another match with Nepo as he’s already been there and don’t that. His argument I believe is it takes months to prepare and that’s months that he could be doing something which he is actually interested in.

1. He has stated on a number of occasions that he doesn't like the format.
2. It is estimated to take between 3-6 months to prepare for the World Championship match. As Carlsen has been World Champion for going on ten years (through five championships) he sees no value in spending his time preparing for it.
3. Further, Magnus would be playing the same player (Ian Nepomniachtchi) from 2021 who, to be frank, dropped the bundle on the sixth game of the Championships (which incidentally lasted for 7 hours 45 minutes) with some awful blunders and was absolutely steamrolled from there ensuring Carlsen was the definitive winner by the conclusion of the 11th game (i.e. three consecutive wins by Nepomniachtchi would not have been enough to draw the Championship at that point).
4. Magnus stipulated that "unless Firouzja wins the Candidates Tournament, it is unlikely that I will play the next world championship match". It appears clear that he wants to test his mettle against the younger generation of elite chess players and is done with this format to verse players he is already significantly ahead of.
5. Magnus hasn't been shy about his desire to be first player to break the ELO 2900 rating. No doubt he feels that this is a more interesting goal and should he devote himself for up to six months to prepare for the World Championship match this might impair his ability to achieve a 2900 rating.

OLYMPIAD UPDATE

Round 1 went without a hitch, with the men beating Libya 4-0 and the women beating Timor-Leste 4-0.

The men are playing Morocco and the women are playing New Zealand in Round 2 today, both are expected to win.

For context, I believe top 30 would be a great result.

Aussies also got the 4-0 too! 😍
