Which club's fans are the best at chess?​

We're back for another season! The Bulldogs won Season 1, the Eagles Season 2 and the Bombers Season 3, who will be next?

Here's how it works

• Every Round, there will be "chess AFL matches" just like the AFL
• Each match comprises of fans facing off against each other in a chess match. The number of players per team depends on interest.
• There is a Finals series just like the AFL season

That's okay! All we're doing at this stage is expression of interest. No commitment at this stage. We will ultimately have captains of the chess AFL teams who will arrange teams. All we need is for you to respond to the thread and say you're interested. We anticipate your time commitment will be one 10 minute game every 2 weeks.

RULES

1. Each league match is comprised of a minimum of 2 games between different players (minimum 10 minutes, random colour). Captains may agree for a match to comprise more than 2 games, although there is no obligation for a Captain to accept such an offer.

2. Any team who cannot play 2 players in a match will forfeit the second game, if it is found that they are the reason for the second game not being played.

3. The league placings will result in seedlings for the final knockout phase. Tie breaks will be determined by 1) match result between two teams, 2) points difference, 3) points for, 4) coin toss.

4. In finals, matches are comprised of a minimum 2 games between 2 players (minimum 10 minutes: one white, one black).

5. I shall rule on all decisions and my decision will be final.

6. All-Star (optional): Each Captain will choose to nominate 3 players in their respective league, giving each 3/2/1 votes respectively based on quality of play, fair play and posting in the thread.

1. In the matches did you mean to say maximum 10 minutes on the clock ? or as you expressed it "minimum 10 minutes" and if minimum is ten, what is the maximum time on the clock - is this an agreement reached between players? If so who referees the agreement?

2. How do you propose to stop people using an engine?

Good questions.

1. It is minimum - when the matchups happen I put both sides in a PM and then yes, there’s an agreement within players. Usually people agree to either a 1 day game or a 10 minute game depending on what suits them. I make a call on the result of any game which isn’t finished within 2 weeks.

2. As well as the usual chess.com reporting function and their checks, anyone who suspects engine use can message me (even anonymously, if they wish) and I will have a look at the game and make a call on if outside help is likely to have been used.
