allegations of home cooking refeereeing in OT 3 phx players fouling out
If the Ball brothers (Lonzo and Lamelo) had Ben Simmons' shot selection, how good could they actually be?
Can't comment on Lamelo, but Lonzo's problem is nothing to do with shot selection.
Both brothers (LaMelo from just a few NBL games, to be fair) shoot way too many jumpers and threes for how poor they are at it. They either choose to do it, or are allowed to do it by coaches and teammates, or are put into position to do it in their team's offense. Whatever the reason, they either need to majorly curb it.
It's not a simple matter of shot selection though. If every player could shoot the amount of lay-ups that Simmons does, they would do it. Most can't.
Lonzo is not in the team to score, he's there to facilitate in the open court and defend. Whether that's enough for him to be a high-level point guard remains to be seen, but he can't just not shoot. Defenders are going to sag off him until he proves he can make enough shots. Their generosity is unlikely to extend to within three feet of the basket though.
I'm not sold that he's our point guard of the future, but I'm not going to be so unrealistic as to expect him to eschew shooting. We need to know if he can make enough shots so as to be a net positive. If not, then we move him on.
I'm not saying Lonzo should totally forgo shooting, but just to admit where your strengths and weaknesses are, and not have more than half your FG attempts come from outside 16FT (56.7% of FGA in his first two seasons, 78.2% of his FGA attempts across the first two games this year).
Scale back the jumpers a bit. Just because the defense is willing to dare you to shoot, it doesn't mean you have to do it each time, or try to prove them wrong every time, when you've really made little improvement to your form or results to justify taking those shots. Be a bit more selective, and work your way towards being good enough at it to keep them honest, like a similarly jumpshot-challenged big Californian PG like Jason Kidd eventually did.
You mean bench this type of talent? As if.When are the Twolves gonna help my fantasy team out and start Okogie over Wiggins?
