Griffin and Jordan reunited at last.

Not so much Lob City as Plod City nowadays.

Sheesh

Has to be close to one of the worst contract disasters of all time

Essentially being paid 60 mill to not play for them

Detroit didn't give him that contract, they just traded for it.

I know, that’s what makes it worse lol

He did have that all star season for them where he was very good. But everyone knew back then he was not a 40 mill a year caliber type player

Still seems dumb to give BG 62 million for not playing for Detroit.

On a player option. Treloar levels
It's not dumb, it's a necessary evil.

If there's a player option for $40 mil, and the player in question is crocked, then obviously he's going to opt in. Effectively he had two years left on his deal.

There's no way the Pistons could have traded him this season. At least this way they save $9 million or whatever on their cap next season. This season is moot for them, while next season was already shaping as another development year anyway.

Nah bugger that. Blake was basically able to opt out and still get 25 million next year. That's ridiculous. If he really did want to go to a winner, he wasn't staying next season, so Detroit held the upper hand yet let him have his cake and eat it too.

Most times teams know when they sign players to max contracts that finish in a players mid-30s the last year or 2 will be sh*t. They're just hoping to get more value than they pay in the first 3 years. Sometimes it doesn't work out :p

The Nets are using one of their veteran minimum contract slots to sign Blake Griffin per @wojespn, leaving them with both the Spencer Dinwiddie disabled player exception ($5.7M prorated) and the taxpayer midlevel exception ($5.7M prorated).

Otto Porter Jr. will be a free agent this offseason and he could be bought out by the Chicago Bulls.

Porter has only played in 45 games with the Bulls since they acquired him from the Washington Wizards in 2019 due to ongoing back issues.

The Golden State Warriors are one team with interest in Porter, sources tell Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer.

The Golden State Warriors have interest in trading for Victor Oladipo, sources tell Kevin O'Connor of The Ringer.

Without cap space during the 2021 offseason, the Warriors are against a time limit to acquire Oladipo. Golden State's interest in Oladipo signals their intent to add another ball handler to their core. In addition to the departure of Kevin Durant and the injuries to Klay Thompson, the Warriors have also missed the ball handling of Andre Iguodala and Shaun Livingston.

Oladipo will be a free agent this offseason and has been most strongly linked with the Miami Heat.

The next player to opt out of $40 million guaranteed for a minimum contract will be the first.

Was never, ever going to happen.

Victor Oladipo and the Warriors have expressed interest in each other. The Warriors would like another ball handler to drive the second unit. In order for this to occur, on face value the rockets will want a young stud. Kelly Oubre may fit that mould and in addition his contact shall be attractive

So why not just keep him instead of giving him 63 million $US to not play for the pistons?

They are tanking next season anyway

He'd had value as an expiring contract next season too

They're doing him a solid by letting him join a contending team. He's repaying some of that kindness by shaving $13 mill from what he is legally owed.

There's a reason why this kind of thing happens in the NBA.

They're paying him regardless, and they won't get any value from it either way. They've chosen the lesser of two evils.

He'd had value as an expiring contract next season too
Doubt it, that's a huge contract to move.

Say Washington wanted to get out from Davis Bertans' contract. He's making $15 mill, Griffin's making $38 mill. So you're looking for a team that has two bad contracts that it wants to unload. Or a Westbrook.

In which case, why would Detroit hitch themselves to that wagon again? Why take on more bloated contracts? Better to just bite the bullet and get the painful roster surgery out of the way.

I'm surprised this is even surprising to people. Detroit did what it had little option but to do. They aren't famous for having one of the NBA's great front offices, but they're not so incompetent as to pay out $60 million in dead salary if they truly had other realistic options.
