Griffin was owed $38 mill for next season and half of this season's wage when he was bought out, so let's say a total of $57 million

He gave back $5mil this season - which is nice, but doesn't really do anything for Detroit - and $8 million for next season. Meaning Detroit will have cop a one time lump sum of $30 million in dead salary on their books next season, which is more than a quarter of their entire salary cap.

Horford is still owed another $41.5 million over 2021/22 and 2022/23 - and that doesn't include his salary for the remainder of THIS season - which means that if he was bought out, OKC would not only sacrifice a decent chunk of their cap next season, but also probably at least $10 million in 2022/23. That's a lot of dead money to commit to for an extended time period.

If they stretched it out it would be almost as bad, probably $10 million per season for five years if he was bought out tomorrow. No GM would agree to that.

Come the end of the season, Horford will be eminently tradeable, especially to any team looking to get out from underneath a big contract. Or he could be traded into cap space by a team like the Knicks. So the chances that he gets bought out this season are very, very slim indeed.
