Re: Egan

Scarlett, Harley, Milburn & Mackie are all big enough to play key position in defence. Even Blue Jocks Borris and Rooke are tallish types.

Re: Egan

Scarletts the No.1 man now, he's gotta step up big time!

No more Jonathan Browns (thank God) but he has to do better than
he did Saturday night.

This is also where the best backline in the comp has to help each
other out more than ever.

Scarlett can now show why he's the AA Fullback in this finals series.

Re: Egan

Personally, I think we can handle North without Egan. Even though they have a tallish backline, I don't see any of them standing up and kicking a big bag, which is what they'll need to do on the 'G against us in order to end up in front.

Problem is though, if he is out for the season, this is a real blow, as I think he is more crucial than we give him credit for. I'm not sure we could handle Port or WCE without him, as the freedom he gives our backline structure helps us win games against opposition like that.

I'm pretty nervous now.

Re: Egan

Egan has been a revelation this season, but we can cover his loss. If it was Mooney, or Ablett, or even Ottens, I'd be more worried!!

Re: Egan

Leave him out for this week, bring him back in the 2nd week which gives him 2 weeks off. If its just a hairline fracture, give him some jabs and play him even if he's not 100%. No bloody way we're bringing in inexperienced players with man cans.

Re: Egan

Tom Harley goes to CHB and Rooke comes into the back pocket.

thats what i can see happening.. makes our backline more accountable with scarlett/milburn not going to be able to run off as easily.. win this week and if god loves us enough he will be right for the prelim or even gf..

big blow, get well soon eges!

Re: Egan

shocking news and shocking timing.

No point operating now. Give him the best chance possible to get back for the semi or GF if we make it that far.

Doubt Mackie has the bulk to play as a KP backman but dasher, scarlo, harley and hopefully Rooke should be sufficient cover for north & beyond if needs be.

yeah l was about to say the same thing.. harley has been a good CHB for the cats as harley has been good since he been back now its time to step up for finals rooke into a pocket thats still a good back line..

Re: Egan

This could turn out to be a considerable blow, or it could it could prove to be simply an inconveniance. I tend to think it could prove damaging in the sense that players who previously played attacking roles, like Mackie and Scarlett, will now be restricted. In other words, Egan is so important for the purpose of structure, and the only way I can envisage us adapting without losing any run and attack from defence, is if Harley steps into that position and performs admirably. I'm pretty pissed off and pretty worried now. This did have to happen though I suppose. Geelong couldn't possible have been lucky when it came to injuries on the eve of finals... something would be awry in the universe.

Re: Egan

I'm shattered by this. He has been crucial for us this season. It throws our well functioning backline all out of whack. On the positive side lets just pray Ablett, Mooney, Ottens, Scarlett stay fit. We have to remember that very few sides in the 8 are fielding their best side. Weagles missing Kerr and all that, but our depth will be tested.

I think we can get past the Roos without him, after that I'm really worried.

you say restricted, I say accountable.

We've got a lot of running players, but only one fullback.

I want Scarlett to be the General and own the backline this week.

Whoever plays fullforward for them; Scarletts job is to tear them a new
******** and show why he's AA.

Re: Egan

Enter the dragon.....

No wait, Enter the KING!

This is taylor made for the big guy, who played his best footy as a strong ruckman who dropped back into defense to cover the "hole" so to speak.

It would unfortuantely mean going without Blake, but with Rooke in for Egan directly, Harley to CHB, and King dropping back as a spare defensive man when out of the ruck contest, it still gives Scarlett, Mackie and Dasher a bit of leeway to leave their men and attack. This really is where we need King, Blake just hasn't got that defensive prowess yet, but King really can make a difference here....

Egan is a massive blow, and to cover him is going to take some resilience, but we have the stock and we have the class so hopefully this will only act to make us present a stronger united front!

I thought of King too, but the downfall is that he doesn't have the pace for the role.

Re: Egan

Weird, I was saying to guys at work today that the one place on the field where we have depth is the backline. This will hurt, but with some rotations, I think as far as injuries go, this is managable by the club. Harley or Mackie to CHB depending on the player. Mackie played well on Buddy so can play tall and quick. Hunt has been playing well, so can take the smaller players Harley has been playing on.

The one downside is that Harley has been great as the 3rd tall, filling gaps, directing traffic etc, so I would look to Milburn to fill that role.

No you don't play King as a CHB, you play him as a ruckman who drops back - more or less like a zone player. with Harley to CHB and Rooke in the back pocket on the small forward (which would be Corey Jones). King is very good in this role and played his best footy for the cats doing just this...and with Scarlett and Harley, back in 2000 - 2004.

I don't think it would disrupt the setup too much, and would still allow Scarlett and the HB's to have some freedom to run off there men. The sacrifice unfortunately would be Blake, however you have to be realistic, even though the guy is a champ and is probably just winning the ruck contest against King, Blake will not be able add the same defensive presence as King (just look at Kings tackle count and his effective spoil statistics throughout his career).

Re: Egan

A problem will be who takes brown? king can drop back and assist, but cant man up. we are still way taller across the ground - unless some of you bored Uni Students can show me the Stats to prove otherwise??
One suggestion the ole boy partridge has made is bring hawkins in and play tall up forward - go attacking and not reactive to laidley, dragging Brown away and reducing the height problem. This may also lead to having Petrie dragged down back if Ottens rests up forward, which would be a huge win for us. If it is a problem, which IMO its not. Another plus is Firrito, another other key tall backmen may not make it back in - and if he does will be restricted. Our Mids will smash them in the clearances, and the tall forward strucutre should win the day. We can cover Egan, Harley needs to step up
