Injury list
Ben Brown: The spearhead had post-season hip surgery and remains in the rehab group on a modified program that has included straight-line running and mobility work. Will look to increase his training intensity over the Christmas break and is on track to return to full training in January, so should get a solid block of work under his belt before round one.

Majak Daw: Managed a foot fracture for much of this year before undergoing surgery at the end of the season. North has been encouraged by the intercept defender's progress with running and skills work. Expected to rejoin North's main training group in January.

Sam Durdin: The key defender is being nursed back from a broken right tibia that prematurely ended his season in July. Restricted to walking, weights and injury-prevention exercises when he trained at high-altitude in Utah for three weeks over the off-season, but has resumed running and will gradually ramp up his work load ahead of an expected return to full training in February.

Taylor Garner: Being managed carefully after a succession of groin and hamstring injuries restricted him to just six VFL games in 2018. Garner has done quite a bit of running and skills work, so is reasonably fit. Given the injury-prone forward's body has failed him so often in the past, the Roos will look to gradually increase his training intensity after Christmas with a view to having him fit for round one. The big test for him will come when he starts sprinting and explosive drills.

Ed Vickers-Willis: Ruptured his right PCL in North's round seven win over Sydney in a heavy collision with a behind post, but resumed running and light skills work in mid-August. The defender, who has played just 14 games in four seasons at Arden St largely due to injury, is being managed cautiously given his history, with his work load set to ramp up after the Christmas break.

Will Walker: The midfielder did not require surgery for the posterior cruciate ligament injury that ended his season in round 22 against Adelaide, but his initial hopes of starting pre-season training on day one proved overly optimistic. Now slated to resume full training towards the end of January.

Declan Watson: Was ultimately given all of last season off to focus on his rehabilitation from the left knee reconstruction he had in July 2017. Resumed training with North's main group in August and ran impressively in the club's Yo-Yo test last Friday.

Sam Wright: The veteran has had no new setbacks after successfully returning last season from prolonged foot and ankle issues. At 28, he needs to carefully manage his body, but he has already participated in running and skills sessions and from next week should be ready to train with the main group.

Jack Ziebell: The captain had minor knee surgery in the off-season but is set to make his earliest start to pre-season training for several years. Sat out the club's recent 2km time trial and yo-yo test, but started running just a few weeks after his operation and is expected to return to the Roos' main training group next week.

Cameron Zurhaar: The forward has had a frustrating time as he returns from the broken ankle he suffered in round 16 against Gold Coast. He has completed running sessions and skills work, but has been forced to back off his training at times after experiencing soreness. Another player who is expected to get a good block of work under his belt after the Christmas break.

Jacobs makes encouraging return
Run-with midfielder Ben Jacobs was sorely missed by the Roos when he missed most of the second half of 2018 with lingering concussion-like symptoms and chronic sinusitis. After successful nasal surgery, the 26-year-old returned to training on day one of pre-season and, in great news for North, is completely over his concussion problems. Although he is still getting over his operation, Jacobs is steadily rebuilding the fitness he lost in his extended stint on the sidelines. Performed strongly in the 2km time trial. - Nick Bowen

Sitting a lot better than last year. We had so many players have post season surgery last year. Good to hear Jacobs in full training. Also good to see Watson making in roads quickly because he really needs to!

Which random malady will be inflicted upon Jacobs this season?

I'm going with Cholera.
Meningitis transmitted by a flea that only survives on one breed of rodent, of which there are only three left, in the darkest depths of the Borneo jungle, which was transported here in a contaminated crate of palm sugar, shavings of which were used in a Thai salad that he ate at a popular East Asian restaurant over the Christmas break.

Could someone who knows provide an updated injury list that includes today’s calf injuries. It has become a little concerning with the amount of players that will have only completed limited pre-seasons.

I don’t know much but Tarrants calf couldn’t be too bad. Him and Brown were training pretty hard from what I could see yesterday. I’m guessing they just didn’t want them in the match sim so they didn’t cop a knock.

Player Injury Estimated Return
Majak Daw Pelvis/hips Indefinite
Sam Durdin Finger 8-10 weeks
Ben Jacobs Sinusitis Indefinite
Robbie Tarrant AC joint Round one
Scott Thompson Suspended Round two Will Walker PCL Indefinite

Updated: Wednesday, February 20

Early prognosis

Tarrant is in a race against time to be fit for round one, but North is confident its best key defender will be fit to take on Fremantle and lead a Roos' defence that will be without Daw and Thompson, while fellow tall Durdin was ruled out for 10 weeks on Wednesday after suffering a deep cut to his little finger. Jacobs continues to complete a good volume of training but has not yet made a full recovery from an off-season sinus operation. The Roos won't risk the run-with midfielder in games until he has completely overcome lingering symptoms of congestion and grogginess. Second-year midfielder Walker is making a frustratingly slow recovery from the PCL strain he suffered late last season, while North will approach Daw's rehabilitation one step at a time despite the remarkable progress he has made since his fall from the Bolte Bridge in December. Jack Ziebell, Mason Wood and Jasper Pittard (all calf strains) returned to full training this week and are expected to play in the JLT Community Series. - Nick Bowen

If it stays like that we will be okay

A Jacobs explanation would be nice given this has been going on since before the gold rush.
There was an explaination last week. The surgery went well but there are some lingering symptoms that will clear up gradually. But apparently this is some big cover up for something far more sinister that the damn club isn't telling us, just like Durds cutting himself with a knife whilst opening a food packet. Bet he was holding a flick knife in his pocket whilst doing lines at the rippers with Dan Hannebury, cracked a chub and cut his finger off.

You mean something sinuster, but yeah otherwise accurate.

So another one of those Josh Gibson fell in the bathtub cases ey.

Ongoing headache can be a huge problem even after a successful FESS apparently and this may explain why BJ is back on the indefinite list.

Unbelievably frustrating for all concerned.

An old study that may give some understanding is here.
