With any idea to trade with Geelong that involves us trading 37 to the Cats; is there a rule that you can’t trade a draft pick back to the club you received it from? Or have I dreamt that.

Geelong have very few list spots, which is why we got 37 because they were never gonna use it this year so effectively swapped it for a 2nd next year. Not sure of the rules, I think as long as the deal is different than the one used to acquire it.... like if it was just pick swaps and then we picked swapped again that might be frowned upon, not sure

If we did the gws pick swap to get 6 & GWS’s first, who would have an inventive to trade their first in the teens this year for GWS first next year?

I think we should trade our 2020 first, for various reasons. This draft should be about the taking the best available kids, with next year being a focus on NGA/FS picks.

If we're taking 5 players this year, and 5 players next year (NGA/FS x 3, Luko & Grundy) that is a massive list overhaul in just 1 AFL season, we will have a drastically different team going into the 2021 season.

2019 Draft

Trade our 2020 1st round (likely Pick 1-8)
Picks in this 'zone' will still be quite valuable, even in a 'compromised' draft. Not sure how many FS/NGA kids are likely to go Top 8.

There really are only two candidates as you’d want a top 10 pick for our 2020 1st - those being GWS or Fremantle. Either of those two may look to shift their top 10 pick(s) into 2020 if an early bid comes for Green/Henry and they have been unable to leapfrog those bids prior.

I'm not sure if anyone has found anyting official saying once a bid comes in that you can trade your picks out of the draft. If they get an inkling that a bid is coming in then yeah that's fine, but not once a bid has been made.

Agree GWS and Freo are looking the only candidates

Would you just do a AFC trade 2020 1st for pick 6 straight up?

I'd be very interested in doing a -

AFC trade 2020 1st, pick 23, pick 45, pick 49

for

GWS pick 6, pick 40, 2020 1st (approx 16) and 2020 2nd (approx 35).

GWS get Green and an early pick next year, in exchange for an early pick this year (which they'd no doubt lose for Green) and later picks next year.

We get those late next year picks, plus still pick at 4, 6, 28, 40 and somewhere in the 60s.

Yep, love it.

Couldn't be a straight swap of GWS Pick 6 for our 2020 1st, as they'll need later picks this year to match a bid for Green, which the rest of your scenario points to.

Well, if we are going to go for it, how about a trade that gets us involved with both GWS and Melbourne? GWS could trade with us, but would be worried about Melbourne bidding against them. We could get past this by putting together a trade to suit everyone. GWS and Melbourne could do a straight trade, but that would leave Melbourne perhaps missing out on the player they want if we draft them. This way they can agree with who GWS draft and assuming it's not who they want, Melbourne still get their player and pick up extra draft pics as well.

GWS:
Give - Pick 6, 2020 1st round
Get - Pick 3

This lets them get a player of their choice, plus Greene (basically two top 5 picks).

Melbourne:
Give - Pick 3, 8
Get - Pick 4, 23, 28 and GWS 2020 1st round pick

Turns pick 8 into picks 23, 28 and 2020 pick 14-18. Given Melbourne's next pick after 8 is at 97, they may want to claim a greater spread of talent.

Adelaide:
Give - Pick 4, 23 and 28
Get - Pick 6, Pick 8

Drop two picks and convert two second round picks in to a top 10 pick.

Ultimately it depends on whether Melbourne are able to ensure they still get the player they want and then prefer to improve their draft hand by spreading pick 8 into multiple picks.

For us, we will ultimately have converted pick 9 and 19 into pick 6 whilst also swapping 23 and 28 in to pick 8.

THEN to really go for it;

Geelong:
Give - Pick 14, 17 and 24
Get - Pick 8, 37, 45

Adelaide:
Give - Pick 8, 37 and 45
Get - Pick 14, 17 and 24

Geelong get in to top 10 in draft. Adelaide split 8 in to 14 & 17 while upgrading 37 to 24.

We end up drafting at;
6, 14, 17, 24, 45, 49

Players drafted then are;
6. D Stephens
14. Luke Jackson or F McAsey
17. W Gould
24. W Day
45. N Bryan (ruck - f we don't take Jackson earlier)
49. M Rosas Jnr

Happy days.

Here's my hope, with these trades happening through the night.

4 for 6 and 2020 GWS first
37 and 49 for Hawthorn's 30
Our 2020 first and 45 for Geelong's 2020 first, 17 and 24

6, 17, 23, 24, 28, 30.

In 2020, the Geelong and GWS firsts and the 2021 AFC first are all on the table for Hately and Lukosius.

We agressively trade, again move on some 28+ year olds and grab the Academy players.

It's looking less and less likely that they'll trade with the Crows for Pick 4, there's simply no point. The only way they do that is if Melb tell them they're not going to bid on Green, which is unlikely to happen.

They'll either trade with Melbourne, or they'll trade their Pick 6 out of the draft and look for someone to help them out with enough points to cover a Green bid this year. Funnily enough Crows are well placed to do that.

If Melb knock them back for a trade there's absolutely no way they just sit there and 'hope' a bid doesn't come in for Green.

Certainly an interesting twist, GWS trading out of this years draft if they cant get the deal done. I hadn't heard that before.

I suppose the concept would look something like;

Crows 2019 3rd rounder (which ever pick satisfies the points required for Green bid minus their 1st rounder) + 2020 1st
for
GWS Pick 6 + 2020 steak knives for our academy bids

For Crows;
Positive: 2 top 10 draft picks this year + more points for academy points next year
Negative: No 1st rounders in 2020 draft... (yet)

For GWS;
Positive: Paying cents on the dollar for the 3rd best player in the draft + 2 x 1st rounders in 2020 (one of which a chance to be top 5)
Negative: Miss out on their guaranteed 2 x top 5 picks + risk of the Crows going up the ladder, or even stagnating.

TBH, I cant tell if its madness or genius... For either team!

If GWS are simply after the points for Green...

Would they do 6 and 80 for 23, 28 and 49?

Works out very marginally in their favour.

Leaves us with 4, 6, 37, 45 80

Doubtful, they'll be looking at trying to bring in an early 2020 1st if they're trading their Pick 6 this year. They should be able to accumulate enough back end picks this year to cover a Green bid by trading their 202-0 first, which is probably going to be around the 15-20 mark.

Why? Green is high first round quality, so it's not as though they're missing out in that regard, and they'll still have their own 1st rounder next year too.

I think it would look more like we trade our 3 back end picks (37,45,49 = 1117 points, equiv to Pick 15) And our 2020 1st to GWS for their 2019 Pick 6 and their Round 1 pick next year (approx 15-20)
GWS will then have enough points for a bid on Green this year and a Top 6 pick next year instead. If they don't have an academy prospect set to go that high then they take it to the draft

We end up with 4, 6 , 23, 27 - and look at splitting 4 or 6 into 2 x picks...

They'll either go down before the draft, or they'll wait to see what Melbourne do and do that trade with us AFTER Melbourne has selected.

They may not get a trade down for points that they like (which seems unlikely) or they may think it's worth holding to see. Or they may trade with Melbourne, if Melbourne is willing to do it.

The thing is - Melbourne either choose the 3rd best player in the draft, or the 7th. It feels like there is a big chance they could miss out on two or three of their preferred players if they go down, while it feels less high stakes for us.

Melbourne MIGHT decide to not stuff around. Equally, they might decide to call Green there no matter what, just to keep their pick 7 intact?

I was thinking something similar to that

GWS trade 6, 2020 1st for
AFC 2020 1st, 23 and 45.

They get Green this year for 23, 40 and 45 (that's enough points to match any early pick) - which means they've used a LATE first next year and pick 40 to get Green, and they've kept a very early pick in the draft for 2020.

We pick at 4 and 6 - and MAYBE turn 6 into 14 and 17?

Why would they wait to see what Melb does? If Melb say no to a pick swap, GWS aren’t going to wait until Melb nominates Green. That means their Pick 6 automatically gets chewed up meeting a bid. If they can’t get a deal done with Melb then they’ll simply assume Melb are going nominate Green.
Better for them to trade their Pick 6 out with the above scenario I mentioned above as they’ll preserve that high pick in the form of our 2020 1st rounder, which will likely be top 6

Pick 4 is worth more than that. Considering there is likely to be 3 x NGA/FS selections (are there anymore? Green, Henry, Maginness) before Geelongs selections, those picks will be pushed back to 17, 20 and 27, which we absolutely would not do for Pick 4

So to clarify , on draft night it will go something like this

pick 1GCS
Pick 2 GCS
Pick swap. We get pick 6, GWS get some later picks and our 2020 2nd
Pick 3 Melbourne
Pick 4 Crows ( we don’t bid on green )
Pick 5 Sydney - select green . GWS match with later picks
Pick 6 Sydney
Pick swap gws get pick 7 for 2020 first and our 2020 second . They then select who they want at 7
If GWS trade you pick 6 they cannot trade it back in. I think they should be doing something like this though. No point holding on to pick 6 and have it swallowed by a Green bid.

Back
