My Olympics, Alain Bernard is a drug taker. SBS has the best coverage, I don't care if its Lithuania vs Poland in the womens handball, its all class, AFL commentators take note. Handball is the best game after AFL.
Cricket should be included in the Olympics, 6 extra gold for Australia, Test, ODI, 20/20, womens, you know it makes sense. My new tv rocks.

She gets the record for being the best looking :D

Did Phelps actually touch the wall first? Pause this video on 7 seconds and it appears the Serb has touched the wall first:

Anyone see Usain bolt run the 100m sprint? what a gun he was running for fun in at the end. Imagine if he kept running at the end instead of slowing down would have smashed the wr even more

That was incredible.

Something like, before this year, he'd only ever run one 100m sprint. And he still says his main event is the 200m.

He slowed up at the 85m mark last night, and still did faster than any man has ever run that distance by about 0.06. Should probably have run 9.65 at the very least.

This could be one of those records that no one may beat for a very long time (except for himself of course).

9.69 seconds  6ft 5 Jamaican Champ.

What a runner. My highlight after the race was of him posing for piccies by some of the spectators who were seated right on the fence. He did it with fun and laughter and obviously made their day. Seemed to be enjoying himself, not like some Po faced athletes who I won't name who take themselves so seriously AFTER their event win or lose.

Has anyone ever won a 100 metre sprint so easily and run so fast at the same time?

I just hope he's clean. I will be devestated if he isn't.

Bolt still in the running to take sprint double in Men's 200m

Updated: 2008-08-18 11:25:12

(BEIJING, August 18) -- Brian Dzingai of Zimbabwe has run the fastest time in round one of the Men's 200m at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to advance to the semifinals tomorrow night, August 19.

His time of 20.25 seconds put him ahead of Great Britain's Christian Malcolm, who ran in 20.42 seconds to push Wallace Spearmon of the United States into third with a time of 20.46 seconds.

Leaving the world in awe after his phenomenal 9.69sec world record triumph in the Men's 100m on Saturday, Jamaican Usain Bolt is the favorite to also win this event.

Bolt is still in contention to complete the sprint double in this event after recording a time of 20.64 seconds to qualify for the semifinals ranked 17th.

Bolt has run the three fastest 200m times in the world this year - 19.67 (Athens), 19.76 (London) and 19.83 (Ostrava). His winning 19.67 at the Athens Grand Prix in July was the fifth-fastest ever.

At just 21, Bolt has already achieved so much in such a short period. In 2002, he won the World Junior 200m title, becoming, at age 15, the youngest-ever world junior champion.

Still a teenager, he went to the 2004 Athens Olympics but did not progress past the heats of the Men's 200m because of injury. In 2007, Bolt won the Silver medal at the world championships, finishing just behind Tyson Gay of the United States in 19.91 seconds.

The US trio of Walter Dix, Shawn Crawford and Spearmon will all be breathing down Bolt's neck. The three sprinters proved at the 2008 USA Olympic Trials that they are capable of producing a sub-20 second time in the 200m. Both registering 19.86 seconds, Dix just pipped Crawford, the finish line camera separating the two on the line by 0.005. Spearmon was not far behind in 19.90 seconds.

At the 2008 USA Olympic Trials, reigning 200m World Champion Tyson Gay broke down mid-race with a hamstring strain, and was not selected to compete in the Men's 200m in Beijing.

Only one Jamaican sprinter has been crowned Olympic champion in the Men's 200m - Don Quarrie at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Games.
Carl Lewis from the United States was the last man to complete the 100m-200m sprint double at the Olympic Games, in Los Angeles in 1984.

Anna Meares into the final of the Sprint. Unbelievable effort to come back from a broken neck in January. One of the highlights of the games for me.

And thanks to Channel Seven for showing it about half an hour delayed... good old ABC radio kept me up to date.

Magnificent from Jamaica
20th August 2008

Beijing - Usain Bolt took 19.30 seconds to prove Michael Johnson wrong and to rewrite 112 years of sprint history. He then took a year to explain the double double at the Beijing Olympics with a combined total of 29.09 seconds.

Bolt became the first man to win an Olympic sprint double with world records in the 100m and 200m. That also made him the first man in sprint history to lay claim to both marks at the same time.

"There is a new king in town," said one Jamaican journalist while the nation's sports minister Olivia Grange said that "we are the sprint factory of the world."

"We have reggae, we have the best coffee, Bob Marley gave us rastafari, and now we have Usain Bolt," Grange said boldly.

The world was already running out of superlatives when Bolt bettered the 100m mark to 9.69 seconds on Saturday, easing up in the closing stages.

On Wednesday night, the task was even more daunting to describe how Bolt had managed to better Johnson's seemingly invincible world record of 19.32 seconds from the 1996 Olympics.

Before Bolt could explain himself the clock had ticked over to Thursday which marked his 22nd birthday.

"It blew my mind and it blew the world's mind," said Bolt, visibly enjoying the historic moment as he watched himself run on TV.

"That guy looks cool. That guy is fast," he quipped.

Indeed he was and that even took Johnson by surprise after the great American had elaborated on why Bolt would get the record eventually but not on the night.

"I don't think he'll break it here. I will be shocked if he does. To run 19.3 he's going to have to run the curve a lot better and hold his speed to the line. But then I didn't think he was going to run 9.69," said the legend who also owns the 400m world record.

Johnson also named Bolt's 100m win "the most impressive athletic performance I have ever seen in my life."

Both verdicts lasted less than six hours and Johnson conceded defeat to the BBC.

"Unbelievable. That was even better then the 100m because he used every single ounce of energy. He wanted that world record. It wasn't about beating anyone else because he was way ahead. Congratulations Usain Bolt."

Bolt made it clear again that the 200m has been his preferred distance (he only added the 100m this year).

"I said all season the 200m means more to me than the 100m. The 200m has been my love since the age of 15. It is dear to my heart," said Bolt.

The only good news for Johnson on the night was that Bolt will not have a go at his 400m world record as well until 2009.

Bolt's coach Glen Mills has for long wanted Bolt to run the 400m along with the 200m. Bolt said he would run the 100m and 200m until next year's worlds in Berlin, and then reassess.

"I will not run the 400m anytime soon. I may do something else after the world championships," said Bolt.

For Jamaican coach Bert Cameron, the 1983 world champion over 400m, it is only a matter of time until Bolt gives the longest sprint a go.

"He knew that he was ready (for the world record). He knows he can go faster, He can break the 400m world record if he wants to," Cameron said.

Grange, Cameron and everyone else in Jamaica from the prime minister to the entire population of 2.6 million stressed that Bolt is just a normal guy - and the man in question agreed.

"He is a humble young man from rural Jamaica, Jamaica is proud of Usain," said Grange.

Bolt went through various antics and dances again before obliterating the field and his day up to the race resembled Saturday, sleeping in until 12, eating nuggets, going to the stadium, having more nuggets.

That was probably not what Grange meant when she said "We eat well," but it did show Bolt's carefree attitude.

Bolt refused any comparison with eight-time gold medallist swimmer Michael Phelps, rejecting a claim from American silver medallist Shawn Crawford, the 2004 gold medallist who trailed the mile of 0.66 seconds at the line.

"I am lightning Bolt," he said, also dismissing comparisons to Johnson.

"I just want to be me. Michael Johnson has revolutionised the sport, I have just done well," he said modestly.

But he also said: "I have written history, I am real proud."

And Bolt warned that he wasn't finished yet with his Olympic mission after becoming the first since Carl Lewis and the ninth overall to get the double.

"I have one more to go. I will refocus again to get one more medal," he said, looking ahead to Friday's 4x100m relay.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Jamaica won another battle in its Olympic sprinting duel with the U.S on Wednesday when Melaine Walker took the women's 400 metre hurdle race ahead of Sheena Tosta.

Walker was slow out of the blocks and spent most of the race trying to make up her early deficit. The two runners arrived at the last 100 metres nearly even before Walker powered away.

Walker finished in an Olympic record of 52.64 seconds, well ahead of Tosta who ran 53.70 seconds, tying up and struggling to maintain her pace.
Britain's Tasha Danvers, seen as an outside contender for a medal, was third in a personal best of 53.84 seconds.
Tiffany Williams of the U.S., who holds the world's second fastest time this year, finished eighth and last in the race.

Jamaica has now collected seven medals in Beijing, all in sprinting events, including coveted golds in both the men's and women's 100m races.

The women's hurdle race came just minutes after Jamaica's Usain Bolt won the 200m in a world record time of 19.30 seconds. Bolt, taking time to finish his victory lap, had to be ushered off the track to allow the women's race to start.

The hurdle race became an open contest earlier this summer after world record holder Yulia Pechonkina of Russia and reigning world champion Jana Rawlinson of Australia both pulled out of the Olympics due to illness or injury.
