Decided to sit down and watch it after your post. Really good documentary, highly recommend. Figo’s first game at the Nou Camp footage after the transfer was some scary stuff. The chants about his girlfriend were horrible and that large banner with Figo holding his young child, we aren’t told what was written on the banner but it wasn’t good that’s for sure.

It’s incredible to think that, in 2000, Luis Figo was the most expensive transfer in history and in the years since, there have been about 65 more expensive transfers. I can comfortably say that about 60 of them aren’t fit enough to hold Luis Figo’s jockstrap.
I found a list in Euros.

Yeah I reckon there are only a handful ahead of him. Ignoring inflation and the stupid money in football, these players (not going to include defensive players) IMO are who are equal to or better than Figo;

Neymar, Mbappe, Bale, Ronaldo, Suarez, Zidane, KDB, and Kaka.

Figo is one of the best players I have watched, one of my favourites too. Excellent technique, and his crossing ability was outstanding too.

The fee was extraordinary at the time. Adjusted for inflation only Neymar and Mbappe to PSG come close.

I slightly disagree re: Mbappe and Neymar only coming close.

As per my post above to RPCB, I would also add Bale, Ronaldo, Suarez, Zidane, KDB, and Kaka.

Good recommendation.

I thought it would be about how Figo was a misunderstood victim in this saga. But watching it confirmed what an a-hole he is. He knew the history of the club with its association to Catalonia, and depth of feeling of the fans but he didn't care. It was all about the money, or as one fan said "he's a mercenary. He can f*ck off". After Gaspart won the Barca presidential election Figo called him and demanded 500 million pesetas.

Of course, some Barca fans went too far with slurs about his family.

Paulo Futre comes across as an a-hole too. The E30 million penalty clause for not signing was a red herring. They all wanted to get paid.
Money talks I guess. Never knew much about Figo the man, but it doesn't bother me. If I was a Barca fan though I would hate him.

But he was a delight to watch at Madrid. One of my favourite all time players.

Don't most PL clubs turn a profit? How can the spending be unsustainable?

The headline says Eton College were condemned for ignoring the ban on playing games - but nearly all the comments say the FA got it wrong. People also saying that lots of school games happened. Good on them.

Pretty much all grassroots sport continued. It was just professional football that was postponed. Other professional sports played too. Even cricket had 1 day off but then continued.

Why is there this major freak out about postponed PL/European games? The entire 2022/23 schedule across football has been set, with dates and times. It’s only a couple of matches for clubs that are interrupted and those will easily be rescheduled before the World Cup.

Or did some people think that domestic football is stopping for the World Cup and as soon as the World Cup finishes, the different FA’s around Europe/the world are going to be hard at work composing the second half of the season schedule?
