They don't really care as long as they sell out. Sad state of affairs though.

The atmosphere of the EPL, and the nature of the product, is one of the things that has seen it become the most popular leagues in the world. If the atmosphere continues to decline, the money will go to the Bundesliga, or one of the other continental leagues with better atmosphere, as more and more people will watch those. The execs may not care now, but this all comes back to the same trend of the discussion on here over the last few days which is that too many people involved in sport are myopic and when circumstances change in 5-10 years, they are absolutely shocked.

Problem is there should be nothing wrong with borrowing a friends ticket if he is unable to go to the game. Unfortunately this is abused

Perhaps limit the amount of times this is allowed over the course of the season?

As it stands, the club is none the wiser if you or a tourist use your ST. If you have to log into your ST account on the club's website to notify them you're lending it to someone else - which you would need to do if your photo was on your ST - then they would be able to keep track of how many times you have done so.

That would be the problem with the loyalty idea I think. You'd be giving discounts to those people that are abusing the system.

It's definitely a difficult one.
United season ticket holders have to attend a certain amount of games to keep their ticket.

Yeah that's a fair enough system. Just means a bit of extra work involved though for the loyal supporter rather than just giving their mate their ST card.

The only thing about this I don't like is that United supporters get threatened by the club if they don't attend a League Cup 3rd Round clash with Morecambe.

If it was set up right it'd be pretty easy to log on, click a button, and notify them.

With all the money in football I'm sure they could design an app, or a straight forward website to make it as easy as possible for the supporter.

yeah, that's sh*t. The Glazers are testing the boundaries a bit with that stuff. Now we are spending $$$ the heat has gone off them a bit but it's easily argued that them loading the club up with debt is the reason we aren't still at the top.

Problem is some ST holders would be of that 55+ generation that have been going for decades and would hate the idea

Yeah fair enough and that's the tough bracket to deal with with anything really. :P

I'm sure the club could think up options for them. A help line they can dial, type in their ST number, and indicate which upcoming match they were lending it to a mate for.

How can they tell if it's you or your mate? As long as the ticket is scanned in, wouldn't that count?

Sorry it was 6,000 not 9,000 that made it to that game against Southampton in 1992 pre-Roman. My point is the Chelsea fanbase has definitely grown significantly from being behind the likes of QPR & Fulham in the 70's & 80's to being back up where it was pre-WW2. I'm not saying there's no history at the club, just that most English based supporters aged 20-40 would be lucky to have gone to a game between 1980-Roman days
20k, but carry on:thumbsu:

Not sure what your point is though.

Don't know about you guys, but this suggests to me that Chelsea has historically been a top 10 club, and definitely the biggest in the area. The only down spot is that decade where Chelsea were in Tier 2. Otherwise, their crowds have always been up there.

Of course they have higher crowds. The two other clubs have stadiums that were under 20K for most that period. Mentioned in my later post it was on the pitch in the 70s and 80s when they were actually out performed by the two minnows

I'm aware of their smaller grounds limiting their capacity somewhat, but it should be noted that they were still up there amongst the big clubs. Part of the reason why the club was in a bit of a rut was because of their redevelopment plans really taking its toll (shortages didn't help), which required Chelsea to sell off its best players to try keep it in the black (Which is very weird if you think about it. Chelsea with no money? The richest borough in the UK? Madness!) Chelsea as a club were really up a creek. When Ken Bates bought that club for a pound, there was a lot of debt and culture problems to be cleared out.

Amazing to think we actually had a rivalry back in the day.

The apparent East Stand fiasco would explain the down turn from the mid 70s.

The club took quite a financial hit from this and obviously it affected our onfield results which then affected our crowd numbers .

This is certainly the problem at the Emirates. The proper fans are well outnumbered by corporates, tourists and fairly impartial fans.

Our away support is sensational you can always hear them over home fans wherever we are playing, just need to drop the prices at the Emirates so 10k more of them can be at our home games!

I'm sorry but I can't agree with this at all. What makes the local Arsenal fans more deserving of a ticket then you or I or any other non local fan? Hell why can't I be considered to be a proper fan even though I've never attended an Arsenal game for reasons largely out of my control. I rarely miss a game (maybe 3-4 EPL games a season) and often stay up to all hours of the night or wake up early in order to watch games of both the first team and under 21's. Sure once I eventually do attend an Arsenal game I might not be able to join in and help create an atmosphere at the Emirates due to not knowing a couple of chants or something along those lines but that doesn't make me any less of a fan.

No one's saying you don't deserve a seat, but when it's pricing out people who love the club, that's the issue. We're not saying they're MORE deserving, just that everyone should get an equal opportunity to enjoy their team.

I don't think it's so much the local supporters but I think clubs are pricing out the traditional supporters. The ones that have been there through the good and bad times, come hail or shine.

But they don't spend money each week in the club shop, they buy their food and drink in pubs and shops around the ground rather than the concourses.

I think we're in real danger of losing these supporters, I can see it at City. And the game will be worse for it.

Theres definitely a place for tourists, and long distance supporters. But the lifeblood of a club is it's core, long term, traditional supporters. Every club in the premier league could let them in for free, and with the new TV deal would still be better off than they were 5 years ago.

We've got an extra 6k seats in the South Stand this season, will be very interesting to see how our single game pricing is. Because there is a load of passionate, knowledgable blues out there that just can't afford to go to games any more. And I find that a real shame.

FWIW FSF are running a protest at all grounds over pricing in a few months. I hope it's widely supported, but I suspect there are just too many "I'm alright jack" types for it to be a success.

Well said.

It's those not bothered types that are the issue, because they aren't bothered by the game they're watching, or how much they're paying, or pretty much anything. It's the hype of going along rather than the actual game that has them going along.

I looked around at the Liverpool game I was at in Brissy, and so many looked disinterested, on their phone, or whatever, and it just makes me wonder why they actually support the club.
