FFA looks set to introduce ‘the Anthony Caceres rule’, closing the loophole which enables Melbourne City to use its brother club Manchester City to sign players

If the FFA are going to stick to their principles of maintaining a fair and equal playing field across the A-League then I don't think they really had a choice but to close this loophole.

I don't have an issue with Man City developing ties with clubs around the world and building their brand, so long as it doesn't give those clubs an unfair advantage over their competitors (as this had the potential of becoming).

Burnley looking like they will be coming straight back!

Edit: Burnley are the first team guaranteed promotion back to the PL. Find out if either Brighton or Middlesborough are the 2nd this weekend.

Suspect we'll just use Girona or NAC Breda instead. But if we do FFA will just bring in another rule and eventually we'll be stopped from doing something that is really important and beneficial for the club and league.

Still think a rule that stops a club getting compensation for a departing player (which they used to pay a high profile player) isnt the best. If it was me I would have signed Garcia and swapped him with Cacares (I think thats allowed?)

Just seen an interview with Pepe. Have always hated him, but he comes across as a very nice bloke.

Don't normally get that in interviews.

I think he's just one of those nutters that when he steps onto the pitch common sense goes out the window.

There's rules that don't allow A League clubs to buy players from another club for a reason. The FFA doesn't want cashed up clubs buying out all the talent on offer in the A League for themselves. The rule should be respected and what Man City / Melb City did was a blatant disregard for the rule to gain an unfair advantage over the competition.

Which rule did they disregard?

Do you think charges will be laid soon?

as long as melb city continue to mirror their heartless parent, i doubt they will win anything anyway.

How long can you last? If it's over 30 seconds then you have a stronger stomach than me.

There's been a bit of controversy about this because it's in English and not French but I'd say that's hardly the biggest issue the song faces.

Toonsend for England anybody? :)

He's always had great stats. What I'd want to know as England manager is whether he's improved his movement with and without the ball (in the past he's been far too predictable - cut in and shoot, cut in and shoot, cut in and shoot etc), and how many final third passes/shots he's attempting per game and what proportion of those are successful, not just the raw numbers.

Melbourne City haven't done anything wrong or broken any rule. Every other club in the league would do the same if they were in City's position, but they can't, and that's the issue here.

For the club, yes. For the league, not so sure you could argue that.

The FFA is in principle attempting to create a level playing field between all 10 A-League clubs. It doesn't want a small group of juggernaut clubs competing for silverware every single year, the league is still not robust enough and 1 or 2 of the weaker clubs would be at risk of following North Queensland/Gold Coast United and folding if this were the case. If one club is able to gain a significant advantage that isn't available to the other 9 clubs, this obviously threatens that principle and needs to be looked at.

It doesn't matter that what City have done is within the rules, City aren't the issue here, it's the way the rules are structured. In every sport clubs will push and bend the rules to gain maximum advantage as is their right and purpose (e.g. AFL players seeking to manipulate the high contact rule by ducking into tackles). By the same token, if the rules are pushed too far that they threaten the FFA's vision for a competitive and balanced league then they too are within their rights to respond by adapting and changing those rules as we're seeing here.

I do agree with you that the current system used to govern transfers between A-League clubs seems awkward and flawed though, but off the top of my head I'm not sure what they could do to change it while retaining that level playing field.

I don't have a problem with the rule change. And I've said on here that we could have structured it better to stop other clubs pissing and moaning. Rule changes were pretty inevitable after this, which was pretty unneccessary.

But two things. The only change between what happened and what other clubs want is that CCM got some money that they used to sign a high profile player.

Other clubs wanted the player and CCM to get nothing in return. Not sure thats good for the game or league.

We want a fair system but is the current system fair when two or three clubs routinely cherry pick from smaller clubs without giving them anything in return? How is losing Cacares for nothing any fairer for CCM than getting money they can use to invest in their squad.

Maybe supporters of some of the less well off A League clubs have an opinion on the current compensation rules and if they help or hinder their club.

I think maybe the FFA have missed a trick here in a rush to close a loophole.

Secondly Melbourne City would probably have signed him anyway. He obviously was keen to come and wages/salary cap etc was all ok. Unless he was getting a cut the £300k CCM got is meaningless to the player.

Finally anyone could have done the same deal. It doesnt gave to be a related party, it could easily have been Girona or NAC Breda that City did the deal with. Or another club/A League club combo.

http://www.thefa.com/news/governanc...-players-mousa-dembele-violent-conduct-charge

Meanwhile, Mousa Dembélé has been charged for an alleged act of violent conduct which was not seen by the match officials but caught on video during the same game.

The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder was involved in an incident with Chelsea’s Diego Costa near the end of the first half.

Further, it is alleged the player’s behaviour constituted violent conduct in circumstances where the standard punishment of three matches that would otherwise apply is clearly insufficient.

Both clubs charged with failing to to control players and/or officials. Lamela no charge.

Dembeles was a dog act. I don't think there can be many complaints if he got a 12 game ban for it.

What with Alli's suspension the week before, we really lost our discipline these past two matches. Got to put it down to being a young team with no experienced players in their to calm it all down. The testosterone took hold I guess
