Beckham was a bit of a marketing tool/brand. However, he never let that get in the way of his football.

Becks was not the most talented player but he worked incredibly hard at his craft and got the most out of his ability/career. In terms of talent, he was similar to David Bentley. I used to see Bentley on Friday nights the day before a game and he was washed up by 30.

Knighthoods and other honours given out far to regularly for my liking. Lets see what Becks contributes in retirement before he gets further honours.

He was a much better player than David Bentley.

Beckham the brand was always much larger than Beckham the footballer. His stature was significantly enhanced through some genius marketing and strategy.

But I've always liked him. Plenty of sportsman with that level of fame and fortune act like campaigners but Becks seemed to come across as a humble and likable type.

A family friend had the pleasure of working on a few projects with him in the states a few years back and said he was one of the most down to earth blokes you're ever likely to meet. Blew off a party being thrown by the Cruises to go to a tiny pub with a couple of mates from the UK who had come over to see him.

Doesn't seem to mind having the piss taken out of him either. This always makes me laugh even after all these years:

So annoying. Pardew and James Beattie talking about strikers feeling contact, and learning to go down. As if it was a good thing.

To be fair to Pardew he said McCarthy should be embarrassed by his dive yesterday, but contact isn't and has never equalled a foul. Feeling contact and choosing to fall down is cheating IMO.

The UEFA Youth League is going to include national champions from next season. Currently only the (senior) champions league teams.

National champions won't go through the groups but will play home and away qualifiers to join the knockout phase.

Had a nice chuckle at Pardew's comments over the weekend (regarding Mike Ashley's lack of investment in the team).

“The whole area - it’s tough because it’s got the most unemployment in the country and the government need to look at that and they need some investment in the North-East.

“And therefore you could get more sponsorship coming into the ground and more corporate money coming in which would boost the funds.

“The funds at Newcastle are way, way below Liverpool and Spurs and that’s the teams that Newcastle expect to compete with.”

Er...no, we expect some investment in the team, especially when it's most needed (maybe the fact we had 13 fit and available first team players for the Arsenal game would be a sign the squad is a bit light?). It's quite humbling to be told we can't compete with the likes of Southampton and Swansea in the transfer market.

Also, the bit about the lack of corporate sponsorship - turn it up!

Ashley is a grub, if he really cared about trying to improve the club's commercial revenue, we wouldn't have all his free 'Sports Direct' advertising crap posted everywhere around the ground. He doesn't care for the club, only his bank account and business empire.

Paul Merson's comments about Ashley are spot on.

“Yeah, yeah, he is a businessman, isn’t he?” Merson said on the Sky Sports’ Gillette Soccer Saturday show when asked if Ashley will be pleased if Newcastle finish fourth from bottom.

“I don’t know the man, but he cannot sit down with me and say: ‘I am here to take the team forward and get them into the top four’.

“Of course, he doesn’t. He named the stadium after his company. Why would he do that? This club has been going for a gillion years.”

Sky have just shown a visual of the mini league between the top 5 teams.

Man United - played 5, points 10
Chelsea - played 5, points 9
Man City - played 7, points 9
Arsenal - played 5, points 5
Liverpool - played 6, points 4

Really disappointing for us, and for me it shows the folly of our tactics against the better quality teams. We've had our moments against all of them but we just can't expect to keep clean sheets if we're so open in defence. In fact I think it's only the one clean sheet against 10 men Man United at home where we were we stank up the second half and were lucky not to concede. So we're going into these games needing 2 goals to win, talk about making it hard on ourselves.

Stats also not good reading for Arsenal or Liverpool with some big games still to come.
