They said the same about Lewis Holtby. I'm a big fan of the way Germans go about producing talent, but even they have stuff ups!

he still looked like a proper footballer. even at spurs. sometimes stuff just doesnt go your way

They should do a table of who has produced good England internationals.

Well, Leicester can contribute 2 members of the starting XI (including one member of the 1966 team), and also the reserve keeper. (Yeah I know that table doesn't count anything before 1986, but still!)

In terms of English internationals these days, the last one I think was Steve Guppy in 1999 against Belgium. It seems that we can contribute good internationals for other nations (Mahrez, Schmeichel, and King), but our English stocks...? Nah.

How many would we have? We'd have more than a couple wouldn't we?

In terms of English players that debuted when they were with us, Guppy was the last, Heskey was the last major one. Wait, aside from Linekar, I think that's it in regards to English players that represented England for the first time with us since the mid 80s. I think we actually do better with the other home nations. Of course, we do have a few former English players in our ranks.

If anything, I can name quite a few players that have made their debut playing for other nations while with us. We've got no shortage of them.

So that does ask the question, who the hell represented England while at Nottingham and Derby? Surely it wouldn't be that many compared to our lousy number.

Stuart Pearce springs to mind. Seth Johnson maybe from derby.

Johnson did for his one cap, just like Guppy.

I think that chart is a list of all time players that have represented England, surely it has to be. Because I can't see how Derby have contributed to the national team in recent years. Nottingham I can understand somewhat in the 80s, but surely both clubs wouldn't have supplied more than at least double our number.

So that means most of our players would have come from the 20s and 60s, when we were a very respectable team, but without the whole 'big club' deal going on.

Mind you, I guess that means when we make a contribution, it's a quality one. Two of England's all time XI with the reserve keeper ready to go. Not bad at all.

Who is more overrated due to England performances Welbeck or Townsend?
Welbeck. We all know Townsend is a decent player who hasn't put it together. Arsenal fans genuinely think Welbeck-Sterling-Rooney will be England's best front 3 haha

He was just a blonde Scotty Parker without the football smarts. Run hard & tried but was not great

I think I referred to him as a German Jordan Henderson at one stage (and I'm pretty sure moomba laughed at me!). You could see the quality in both of them though they didn't impose themselves on games as much as you'd like, Hendo's come a long way since those days, what do you think prevented Holtby making the step up?

You do realise Welbeck is the top scorer in ECQ so far, don't you?

Rooney is better, Kane has only just had his first start but is better, Sturridge is injured but better.

The quality of opposition he's doing in is weak.

Welbeck is no star but he is a solid performer. Townsend is just an average player who shows a glimpse of quality every once in a while imo.

Ideally neither of them should be representing England, but needs must.

I had to do a search as I had no recollection of that. I made a dig about Spurs being ripped off, but never made a comment to or about you as far as I can see.

They are better out and out strikers, not wingers. Welbeck has them covered there and won't lose his spot in the XI.

Edit: Despite the fapping over 3/4 of a good season from Kane, Kane won't displace Welbeck in the XI for the next few qualifiers at least. Even in the CF position. Hodgson rates Welbeck very highly.

Might have been it, I distinctly remember making the Henderson/Holtby comparison at the time, wasn't sure if it was you that I was discussing it with or someone else. Meh. Not important. Shame to see he hasn't kicked on, I suppose sometimes it just doesn't click for certain players.

Sturridge is a better winger than Welbz, he just dislikes playing there. 30 goals in 3/4 of a season is about what Welbeck delivers in two years.
