She was trying to talk this whole competition up and he let her and Channel 9 down. :D

Michael Bridges froffing over Gervinho was embarrassing too. Couldn't say his name and compared him to Archie Thompson. Jesus.

from what i watches, bridges in general is an utter embarrassment.

New boy McLean causing a few ripples already at West Brom, turned his back during the playing of the English anthem - didn't he also refuse to wear a shirt with a poppy for Remembrance day? Pulis apparently has given him a formal warning too...

Also, a nice shout out to the US Toon Army - good to see the stewards allowing these banners! :p

Jatz so far they've brought in the highly rated Tyrone Mings, Distin as a bit of experience in their defence - though I'm skeptical of how much he'll actually play - and Boruc and Federici to give them a PL quality keeper and a decent depth keeper.

Ritchie was being chased by a number of PL clubs in the event they didn't get promoted, and their striker stocks are pretty impressive.

Boruc is a good purchase (Federici will be ok if he get's the oppurtunity). Mings is unproven but that isn't to say he won't excel (Ulloa a great example last season).

I suspect they'll do alright but I'm not sure their game plan alone will keep them up.

Mings isn't exactly in a high pressure position though, a bit like Robertson for us and Cresswell for West Ham. 8m for him is a lot though I agree, and I do think they need to be looking at bringing an experienced striker in. I'm actually surprised they haven't made a move for someone like Jelavic or N'Doye, who have shown they can score goals in a side lacking creativity, and would be relatively cheap.

Yeah valid points.

What would Jelavic be worth? Is he planning on hanging around? Would be big in the Championship if you can hold onto him.

I'd say about 4m. He's keen to get back to the PL I think.

Well he is Irish. There is probably a good reason for this.

Yeah he was born in Northern Ireland I think? (which IIRC are, generally speaking, firmly opposed to England).

I don't really have an opinion one way or the other but it seems to be upsetting a few WBA fans. Could be a potentially disruptive factor for his career with the club. Very hard situation to handle for Pulis IMO.

Read he is from a town that had English forces come in and kill people or something of that ilk.

Wrong way around. The North Irish are usually Unionists (Hence for the UK), however Mr McClean himself identifies himself as 'Irish,' (As in the whole island is its own nation) so he's a Nationalist (I think he's from a Nationalist part of NI, Cityside Derry). That's why he ended up choosing to side for the Republic of Ireland at the senior level, and has publicly made it known that he is 'Irish.'

That said, 'Irish' or not, he should still respect the anthem.

"For people from the North of Ireland such as myself, and specifically those in Derry, scene of the 1972 Bloody Sunday massacre, the poppy has come to mean something very different," wrote McClean.

"Please understand, Mr Whelan, that when you come from Creggan like myself or the Bogside, Brandywell or the majority of places in Derry, every person still lives in the shadow of one of the darkest days in Ireland’s history – even if like me you were born nearly 20 years after the event. It is just a part of who we are, ingrained into us from birth.

"Mr Whelan, for me to wear a poppy would be as much a gesture of disrespect for the innocent people who lost their lives in the Troubles – and Bloody Sunday especially - as I have in the past been accused of disrespecting the victims of WWI and WWII.

"It would be seen as an act of disrespect to those people; to my people."

Fair enough if you ask me. That being said he probably shouldn't earn his living in the country if he really wants to make a statement

Oops, my bad. Thanks for the save FT.

Yeah, I had a quick look on his wikipedia page over lunch and saw he was born in NI but represents the Republic of Ireland (which I thought was unusual - so this clears it up).

Yeah I remember reading that statement - hard to argue against that I suppose. Not sure if I agree 100% with his actions but I can at least respect his reasons.

It's a tough one, I think a lot of Baggies fans seem to be upset as it disrespects their country (at least his actions aren't 'more offensive' I suppose i.e spitting or physically blocking his ears out).

An interesting comment I read is McClean might oppose the English but he's happy to ply his trade and take their coin. Food for thought at least.
