It's just a shame that you've got enough loanees to fill a small nation and none of them will ever play for the club, their sole purpose is to be "fattened up" on loan to generate a selling fee. If they're not good enough for the club most others give them a chance to prove themselves (in the first team) or release them.

Imo, your youth academy doesn't have "playing first team football for Chelsea" as its number one and sole aim, money is a key consideration and that's sad given it's a club with a endless pit of money. It seems like some of these kids are mislead about their prospects at the club.

Not true most the time. A lot of these kids signed come from pretty financially ordinary upbringings & a lot of the parents think their child who is at best Bobby Zamora is the next Lewandowski.

Not really sure how you or Gero are an authority on what Chelsea proposes to players before signing them to be honest.

How many academy players are in the first team squads of those in bold?

PSG: Kimpembe, Augustin, Nkuku, Areola, Rabiot.

Barcelona: Messi, Iniesta, Denis Suarez, Rafinha, Sergi Roberto. Sergi Samper and a few from Barca B are expected to come up next season.

Real Madrid: Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Nacho, Lucas Vasquez, Marcos Asensio. Morata. Then there's others like Jesus Vallejo, the Llorente's and Mayoral who'll all probably get game time next season when they come back from their loans.

Atletico: Koke, Saul, Fernando Torres, Lucas Hernandez, Thomas, Gimenez. Then there's Diego Jota and Theo Hernandez who are expected to get into the first team next season (if Griezmann goes then Jota should be his replacement).

Bayern: Hummels, Lahm, Muller, Alaba and Kimmich.

Dortmund: Bender, Sahin, Gotze, Reus, Pulisic, Schmelzer, Passlack and Durm.

Monaco: Germain, N'Doram, Diallo, Cardona, Almamy Traore and some bloke called Kylian Mbappe.

I could include a lot more considering guys like Christensen get counted as youth products for Chelsea but then that would be cheating.

From what I've read, a lot of kids sign for Chelsea/City because the parents make them due to the money. It's more a parenting issue that Chelsea and City exploit then anything else.

we offer free scholarships at st bede's to every player at our academy, that's the big pull for the club.

Yeah. If money is being offered to low income families for their kids it's a definite problem. Every parent of a 12 year old approached by a PL club is going to think their kid will make it there. If clubs are offering money along the way it's only going to make it even worse

denis suarez also is from celta's academy, spent time at ours and then moved to barca, while getting his big break at villarreal. definitely doesn't count. asensio was a wonderkid from mallorca. vallejo is already 20 and from zaragoza. jota is 20 and came through pacos. kimmich came from leipzig, sven bender from 1860 munich at the age of 20, durm moved from mainz at 20. dont think any of them can be classified as academy talents in the slightest.

personally imo if you dont get someone in before/on 18 they don't count. i think the 3 years before 21 rule works best.

it's why the dortmund dembele signing was so good as i believe they signed him literally 3 days before he turned 18. so he'll count as home grown dortmund as well as home grown stade rennes.

i think it should be where they make their senior debut

the academy that got them their first senior games should be counted as where a kid is from imo

if they're signed before senior debut and then loaned then that club that signed them would count

i think that opens it up to a lot of abuse of the system (even moreso than now)

would cup games count? what if a club spends 10 years at an academy, then moves to a new club and gets 5 mins off the bench?

If you have to have a home grown rule (I don't think it's necessarily a positive thing) I reckon the current definition is ok.

Players loaned out should definitely count as home grown. Loan moves are a part of a players development. And you would hate to have a player whose development would benefit from a loan move stay at the parent club to preserve their HG status.

On kids signing for Chelsea/City for the money it's such a lazy and uninformed accusation.
