Gerrard? There's 10 mids better than him. Its because he scored a header in the final. When he was playing midfield in that game they got trounced. Its only when they brought Hamann off the bench and moved Gerrard around that they did well. Was good coaching by Benitez to recognize Gerrard couldn't run the midfield.

Gerrard made 2 x finals 2 x 1/4 finals and won the CL. There isn't a better CL midfielder this century.

Henry won thte CL with Barca in 2009 so definitely not a choker.

2005-07 during that period post-Zidane and before Xavi & Iniesta really got going, Gerrard and Kaka were without doubt the most dominant and best performing centre mids in the Champions League.

Would be interested to hear your rationale for who you think outperformed them during this period.

I don't recall Gerrard being particularly dominant. Kaka yeah, but I wouldnt have him in a team of the century so far either.

Can't really argue with the plaudits in 05, I don't think he was among the best midfielders over the course of the tournament but had a bigger impact than most if not all.

Following year I don't recall anything special, nor the year after where you made the final but for me never looked really dominant doing it.

As for options I'd have to go back through individual seasons but around that time there were plenty of top performers in the midfield. Xavi and Iniesta were there, Gattuso was brilliant for a couple of years, Ballack, Schweinsteiger, Scholes, Keane, Pirlo, Vieira.

Wasnt referring specifically to champions league teams either. Not sure how many team of the year spots he got but I remember a few thinking wtf when he was named.

Nah, he had a great career (with the obvious missing from his trophy collection).

And he's certainly not the only one that got recognition by reputation. It's pretty common nowadays.
