Ballon D'or is more of a popularity contest these days than a vote of who the best footballer is. Stats wise it's pretty clear Ronaldo was nowhere near the best footballer of calendar year 2016.

That could be a factor but in reality Ronaldo was poor at Euro 2016 apart from the Hungary game.

It was leaked that Ronaldo was going to win it wasn't it? Not really a surprise for me.

Messi (IMO) had a better individual season but Ronaldo collecting the CL and Euros probably what got him over the line in the end.

Think I read since 2008, it's been one of them winning it - amazing feat. Just goes to show how gifted they are.
