Graham Taylor has passed away at 72, was not aware he was ill.

A decent bloke he was

I remember the grief he copped from fans and especially the gutter press when England manager which is a shame as his feats in both stints at Watford and to a lesser extent Villa were quite extraordinary. He was a great pundit on the 5live coverage we get on The World Service too. No doubt The Sun et al will be going on about how much of a good bloke he was after hounding him 1990-1993...campaigners.

Forum kids, to save you going to wikipedia and using up data he was England manager and not up for the job before it was a regular thing.

Yes you're right, gutter press says it all. There was a lot of frustration with Taylor at that time, but he wasn't helped in that '94 World Cup campaign with injuries to Gazza and Shearer. Press went way too far with the personal attacks.

It's all documented on here, one of the best fly in the wall documentaries you can watch. RIP Graham

Have been looking for it on youtube for a while. He didn't help himself with some decision making and selections (Carlton Palmer FTW). I think he subbed off Lineker in his final match too.

Didn't the press compare him to a turnip or something? Wasn't his last game the one where Lineker missed a peno and shat himself?

Think they failed to qualify for the world cup or something.
Used to call him turniphead iirc. One paper (probably Sun) printed a front page picture of him replacing his head with a turnip.

On the "untouchable clubs" UEFA had a perfect opportunity to address that with plans to create a more equitable distribution of champions league revenue.

Of course G14 didnt want that, and pushed for the introduction of FFP, rules that were designed to protect clubs already at the top.

As part of the introduction of FFP plans for a fairer distribution of champions league revenue were postponed.

Given UEFA now is actively working on giving money and ranking points based on historic success I'm guessing the fairer distribution will never happen.

Nice warning from UEFA but they are a huge reason why it is what it is.

Just heard some awful news about the Birch (Alan Birchenall). Apparently had a mild heart attack during an awards ceremony. Thankfully he has made it, and is currently in a stable condition. But gee whiz, aside from Andy King, Birch is pretty much THE Heart and Soul of Leicester, it's going to hurt the whole club, city, and county if anything were to happen to him.

I don't agree with this, because "smaller" clubs would only ever have had the chance to catch up if they'd found themselves a huge benefactor the way City and Chelsea did - otherwise there was still no chance for them. At least FFP has managed to reign in those type of clubs to an extent, allowing for clubs like Leicester to pull off the miracle last season and even my own to become competitive in the top four. Wouldn't have happened without the FFP regulations being brought in

Funny how a club guilty of cheating FFP has the most fans having a sook about it.
Was a critic of FFP long before we put in our first set of accounts.

I could see why is was put in and who would benefit. Most in football have belatedly come to the party on that including UEFA who have belatedly changed their rules to allow initial investment.

The fact UEFA changed the FFP rules a month after we published our accounts for the relevant season is a different issue. But isnt why I think FFP was a disgrace.

why not?

ffp doesnt stop teams being mediocre over 38 matchdays.

Bit of a deflection saying they changed their rules. And you still refuse to accept that City are guilty of cheating FFP.

It wasnt FFP that allowed you and Leicester to do a job. It was simply doing better with your resources than the bigger spending clubs did with theirs.

Whether thats a sustainable thing remains to be seen. Typically we've seen clubs make a run to the top 4 and then struggle to take the next step.

Not sure how it's a deflection.

UEFA published a set of guidelines for clubs when FFP first came out. It's available on the internet. In the guidelines they provided 4 worked examples of how clubs could manage their finances to meet a certain criteria exempting transfer fees and wages of players bought prior to FFP being introduced.

A month or so after we released our accounts UEFA released a new set of guidelines. This is also available online. 3 of 4 the 4 examples UEFA provided in the initial guidelines now failed the criteria.

Remember that these changes applied to a financial year that had already ended.

Basically it was like someone decreasing the speed limit and then fining people for exceeding the speed limit the week before.

The rules were not changed.
I have a copy of both sets of guidelines. The second was issued a few months after we released our accounts (I think 11/12). The main changes were relating to that past season.

So UEFA told clubs how they could comply with the rule, and then changed that guidance after the financial year it applied to had ended.

Both sets of guidelines had allowances for exemptions on contracts signed prior to FFP.

City and PSG didn't meet the requirements to get an exemption, it's as simple as that. Not clubs were guilty of cheating no matter how much some try and deflect.

We didnt meet the criteria under the second guidelines. And couldnt have been expected two given the second set of guidelines were issued after the relevant financial year had ended.

We met the criteria under the guidelines that were in place during the financial year the exemptions applied to.

UEFA told us what to do to get the exemption. And then changed the rules a month after we released our annual report.

Good that you finally concede their were two sets of rules though.

You were trying to claim related party transactions in an effort to get under the threshold for a pre 2010 wage exemption and got busted. It wasn't an issue for anyone else but PSG & City. Facts are you cheated, were caught and punished. There's nothing else to discuss about it. Case closed.

Related party transactions had nothing to do with pre 2010 exemption. We met the criteria, and UEFA moved the goalposts. Simple as that.

The goal posts weren't moved, there was always relief for pre-2010 contracts. You operated at a loss of £149m over the 2 periods; and that's including sales of image rights to yourself and related party transactions. Other clubs had no issue. Facts are you cheated - might be best for you to accept that and move on.
