How great do people think Owen's career could have been had he stayed at Liverpool? He knew where the goal was, and while his skillset was limited, what he needed to succeed, he had in abundance.

Would he be on the same level as Raul if he didn't leave? Would he have been better than Drogba? As good as Shearer?

He left so he can warm the bench at Real while Raul tore it up

Then when he had to leave Real, instead of coming back to us he chose Newcastle. He ****** his own career
Did Liverpool want him back when he left Real?

Yes, the deal was gonna take til the end of the window, so instead of waiting for us he went to Newcastle

This is when we were regularly in the CL and Newcastle with all due respect were midtable at best

Probably was more interested in his horses than his football at that stage

His wage demands were ridiculous IIRC.

He couldn't cope with players not having his determination to improve and win....and would be vicious towards them when they made mistakes

People still want him back as manager for us. Him and PDC were the only 2 who actually worked players here that I can remember.

News through Fox Sports now during teh pregame for the WCQ that Mike Cockerill has passed away.

RIP. IMO he was the best football commentator on Fox and had an obvious love for the game.

I've always wondered what that mid-2000s, pre-Torres team would've looked like had Kewell stayed fit and Owen stuck around for another season or 2. Owen, Kewell, Gerrard, Garcia, Alonso, Hamann ahead of arguably the 2nd tightest back 5 in the league at the time after Mourinho's Chelsea.

Obviously a Champions League win & runner up, UEFA Supercup and an FA cup over the following 3 years wasn't a bad result for that group, but it would've been interesting to see what Owen could've added if he'd stayed and stayed fit. The one thing we were really lacking during that period was a world class striker.

It's funny when you think about it - Owen moved to Real to win silverware, performed quite well but ultimately won nothing while he was there and moved to Newcastle a year later, meanwhile his former teammates were conquering Europe. Not a shadow of doubt in my mind that he would regret that decision to this day.

In response to your question Cruyff14, Owen's body failed him from around 2006 onwards and he was never the same player again, staying at Liverpool probably wouldn't have changed that. His career at the top level effectively ended at 25, but to be fair he'd been 1 of the best strikers on the planet for 6-7 years at that point. Compare him to Drogba, who's career at the top level didn't really start until he was 24 (Marseille), and then went on to have a similar period of time as 1 of the best in his position in the game before heading off to China.

Individually Owen was as good as Drogba in my opinion and was at the top for a similar period of time, his career just didn't follow the usual timeline, and he obviously won fewer team honours.

Shearer is/was a level above both for me.

His career wouldn't be ruined if he stayed, he could still finish, the guy knew how to finish. We won at Istanbul with Milan bloody Baros upfront. Crouch and Owen partnership would've really worked, too, he loved a big man taking pressure off him

Going to Newcastle for a player of his calibre was what finished it, it was basically a death sentence on his career at the top
