Oh please. The last time I saw a thread like this was in 2007.

Erm.

2008 - Hawks
2009- Geel
2010 - Coll
2011 - Geel
2012 - Swans
2013 - Hawks
2014 - Hawks
2015- Hawks
2016 - Dogs.

Are you ******* kidding me with this shit?

:p
Yep, the Vic media was up in arms about the "death" of Victorian football when non-Victorian teams won every flag from 2001-2006, making it 10 out of 15 starting with West Coast's win in 1992. And it's been 9 out of 10 to Victorian teams since. Nothing to see here!

No. Footy is cyclical.
2010-14 it was 6, 6, 4, 5, 5 for Victorian Finals participants. So 5,5,3,4,4 if you exclude the regional Cats.
Don't know, last year was the first year a Melbourne side contested the GF since 2011

True but the fact remains nearly all the VFL clubs were on the knees and wouldn't of survived another couple of years
Half still are...it's too late now but you'd think the dogs, kangas, and saints could merge / fold (or are any of them now sustainable?)

The AFL would be stoked with the way the final eight has panned out.

They have two of the big four clubs in the eight, one of whom looks pretty decent this year.
They have a WA club get in
They have two SA clubs
And best of all, two NSW clubs.

This is a much better top eight for AFL objectives than last year.

Just some food for thought, especially as I'm an advocate for merging a few Melbourne based teams for long term sustainability and financial independence of all clubs as I don't believe there's a market for so many Melbourne based teams in a national comp
It makes business sense but I just can't see which teams you'd merge. Too much history and too many people would be affected. Surely would never happen

With only 2 Melbourne based clubs making the finals in Richmond and Essendon, (7th) (Geelong and the AFL don't consider themselves Melbourne based) is that cause for concern for the AFL and or welfare/sustainability of Melbourne based clubs?

Surely seasons like this with so many interstate sides making the finals it has to hit the hip pocket and crowd attendances at the mcg etc? Or do crowds go up with interstate finalists making it?

Just some food for thought, especially as I'm an advocate for merging a few Melbourne based teams for long term sustainability and financial independence of all clubs as I don't believe there's a market for so many Melbourne based teams in a national comp, as well as having the benefit of stronger comp after it being weakened with the expansion teams breaking the back of the talent pool so to speak.
Which point are you making the hardest?

The AFL are spinning this narrative though. Thats total attendance, not average attendance. It has only been an 18 team competition in the last few years so you can't really compare it to "all time" numbers.
Average attendance was the highest since 2012.

It was higher in 2005-2011, but then dropped with the addition of Gold Coast and GWS.

So really, it's the inclusion of new interstate clubs draining on the AFL's attendences, not the performance of the Vic clubs.

Exactly. Ben Cousins should never have been available to WC under the FS rule and Moreton wasn't available as the rule stood, but you got him when he wasn't actually eligible
Under the rules he was available to geelong, wc or freo as i understood it

If you have something different feel free to actually show it rather than nibble round the edges waiting for someone to throw you a bone
