It was Perec and she is French, but that's not the reason she gets so much publicity. It is in part to do with her Aboriginality and in part to do with the fact she is a sprinter which is a glamorous event of which we don't have many top line participants in. But it is mainly to do with her being Aboriginal.

She is overrated, she is a great athlete, anyone that wins an Olympic gold medal is but she is far from being a champion. She doesn't hold a candle to the likes of Dawn Fraser, Betty Cuthbert, Ian Thorpe, etc.

TV SHOW : Dawsons Creek

FOOTBALLER: Shane Crawford

BAND: Any Pop Stars ensemble

SPORTSPERSON: Ian Thorpe

WOMEN: No woman can ever be overrated.

International Athletics is the toughest and most competitive sport at the Olympics. A bit of perspective with some of the sportsman you raise Zombie.

Says who? You know Rohan you can't just make things up and expect others to agree with you, Cycling is a far tougher and more competitive sport than athletics is as is Gymnastics, Triathalon and plenty of other sports i'm sure.

The amount of training that i had to do for Athletics was huge. Imagine what they would have to do at an elite level.

ALthough I've trained with triathletes, and generally they aren't as tough. (fitness wise) but sprinters are pretty soft too.

How do you judge fitness though? Most middle distance to long distance runners have poor upper body fitness yet are aerobically very fit.

I would say long distance runners were very one dimensional when it came to fitness.

I disagree, over 95% of the world's population have two working legs capable of running, that's why athletics is so competitive ... not all that many Africans have a velodrome or gymnasium in their village.

Who said anything about a velodrome? That's not real cycling.

OK, bicycles ... wouldn't be all that many of them lying around in most African villages

Athletics have a pool of 5.5 billion+ worldwide to draw on, cycling be 3 billion at a stretch, more like 2 billion, hence why athletics is the most competitive event at the Olympics and most competitive sport, soccer be next on the list

More people have fingers than have legs, that doesn't make tiddlywinks more competitive than athletics though.

Yeah ... you're right

Yes I am, saying that everyone has two legs so that means that athletics is the most competitive sport in the world is just as idiotic as saying everyone has hands so tiddlywinks or marbles are the most competitive sports in the world.

Is is exactly the same as saying that everyone who owns a car is a competitor to Michael Schumacher.

I don't go with the Aboriginality thing. I think it is because Athletics is a glamour sport and she is the only one we have who represents us with any solid success.

Imagine Matt Shirvington won the 100m. Cathy Freeman wouldn't make the second back page.

You keep to your opinion, I'll keep to mine ...

What I'm implying is everyone exposed to a sport can become a potential competitor, many more exposed to athletes ie. many more potential competitors. Australian Football is competitive in Australia yet is largely unknown throughout the world whereas majority of the globe has run or been exposed to athletics.

Most people on Earth have run at one stage, many have kicked a soccer ball, not as many have rode a bike and fewer still have competed in a triathlon.

More athletic people round the world have been exposed to athletics than triathlons. How many Kenyan or Tanzanian triathletes do you know of? Whereas Kenya and Tanzania have a plethora of champion middle and long distance runners. I haven't seen many Moroccan gymnasts but have seen plenty of Moroccan middle and long distance runners.

Shirvo winning the 100m sprint is different to Shirvo winning the 400m race though...400m is a bit of a nothing race compared to the 100

Agree but then again, they look good compared to how much crud there is on tv

FOOTBALLER: Chris Grant
Agree

BAND: Red Hot Chilli Peppers
Don't know their music well enough

SPORTSPERSON: Cathy Freeman
Not necessairly overrated (she did win two World Championships) but the most overhyped sportsperson in Australia (thanks to the media) and that's saying something

WOMEN: Kylie Monogue
Yes, again more because of the incessant media adoration from the Herald Sun then anything else. A lot of her recent songs sound as if they were sung by a computer.
