Gero is a major regional centre, not some bumpkin town of 3 people and 7 dogs. There are good and bad parts just as there are with Perth. Most people that live there have some connection to farming or primary industry otherwise there's not a whole lot going on. Not expensive to buy a house relative to Perth so would be cheap to live if you had a good job.

Not really. There is a drug house next door which all types of grubs visit and ruined the street. I live across the road from the local botanical gardens

I’m from Geraldton and still have family there and regularly return.

Geraldton also has more than its share of crime so you won’t be immune from break-ins but it will depend on where you decide to live. It is nothing like how SA describes but there have been known moments should you venture to Rangeway, Utakarra, Spalding or waggrakine - these are Commission areas and lock your car door when you drive areas

It’s currently in a bit of a slump and there are lots of shops closing and unemployment is pretty high - in Geraldton there are two groups - the haves and the have nots, there’s very little in between. It’s a town that for many many years has been run by a rich few and that has seen many business come and go without much success. Shopping hours for such a big town are still regulated and nothing opens on a Sunday and few of a Thursday night. If you want to eat out then choices other than takeaway are limited but there is a developing coffee strip and the foreshore has been substantially upgraded. Very little has changed in all the years I’ve lived there and been going there - change is not high on their radar, they like their town the way it is.

Again there’s two groups of kids - those that are into sport and surf - thrive. Then there’s those who don’t and loiter around and cause trouble - just like every other city and town in Australia . If you’ve got a good kid he will fall in with a good group otherwise He was always going to find trouble if he goes looking for it. I have three nieces aged 18-25 who live there and have no plans to move, along with plenty of extended family around the same age bracket who have also made it their home - they love it. I’ve always hated the place so I’m pretty scathing of it but surprisingly a great many do return home once they are ready to settle down as the surf and laziness of the place does appeal.

Just as I’m sure it is in Wagga if you get involved in the town then you will enjoy it. I would suggest if you do go that you rent for a while while you decide as it’s pretty tough trying to sell your house. Suburbs I would look at are Drummond’s Cove, Wandina and Tarcoola Beach.

Personally I’d head down south but as others have said, the cost of living increases substantially. Good luck whatever you decide

Interesting night last night. lots of weird yelling and screaming, my letter box was pulled out and thrown onto the road, and there is a pile of clothes on our front lawn. Not sure whether to contact the police or not. Screaming and general dodginess has been happening for a month or so now. But this is the first time something physical has happened (letterbox) as far as I know.

Can't you go get a bag of cement and have a big block around the post in the ground making it hard work to pull out? Although I guess in most of Perf it's just that shitty loose sand so it might not help that much anyway.

Pull out was the wrong choice of word. Looks like they broke the wooden post holding it in two at the soil line and then threw the mail box part.

Got a metal letterbox and base from Bunnings for like $30 nearly a decade ago, obviously extremely basic but it's lasted surprisingly well. Concreted in the ground the best a vandal could do mainly is just bend the post.

edit - numbers were probably another $10 or something.

It's just cement mixed with sand with water, absolutely nothing to it and cheap.

If you want it to harden ultra quick there's 'rapid set' ready made stuff (just add water) that is used for stuff like fence posts.
