I don't think being a dual citizen is an issue.

We're like 200 years old.

And basically all our PMs were educated at Oxford or something.

I went and voted at about 8:15 this morning and there were no lines. Walked straight in and straight out, grabbed a sausage sizzle, and was back in the car in less than 10 minutes. That was the quietest it has ever been when I have gone to vote.
And its shaping as possibly the lowest turn out ever under compulsory voting.

As of Sunday afternoon, Perth was recording voter turnout rates of 62 per cent, and 64 per cent in Fremantle.

Guessing a fair whack of coalition voters (more so in Perth which had a significant primary for them) stayed away.

Car in front of me this morning. 15 under the speed limit (that's 45 in a 60 zone folks). All over the road. I was expecting phone or drunk but pull up next to it at a set of lights and there's a woman sitting there brushing her hair.
On her head?

I had someone going 80 in the right hand lane of a 100 zone.

Had a glance on the way past, absolutely nothing going on.

Why should it be compulsory to vote, when it is not compulsory for a major party to put forward a candidate? In my opinion, they are all a bunch of ****s is as a good reason as any to not vote.

Actually a very good point, that first one.

I also don't personally see the issue in people having dual citizenship either. How many of our Prime Ministers have been born in the UK, even in the last 50 years? And how many were educated outside Australia or worked out the country? There is no shame in that and it's not like we're 800 years old in terms of our political system. I just find it a bit weird.

It's also a massive joke when they're pumping so much money into these stupid, superfluous elections. I wonder how much resource and cost went into that?

Leaving aside the incomparability of the two statements, you don't actually have to vote. All that is required is for you to get your name ticked off the roll and collect a ballot paper.

You can graffiti it or leave it blank or write in a vote for Bruce Wayne if you wanted to and then dump it in the box on the way out.

I don't get the opposition to having to vote.

You don't have to vote in the US and look how that turned out. Only 58% of eligible voters bothered to vote and they ended up with Trump. Would not have taken that many votes to swing the election the other way via a couple of key seats and somewhere in the range of 50-100m people didn't vote.

Right, but getting your name crossed off the roll is compulsory.

I'm not sure what you mean with your comment about incomparability, is that even a word? Do you not agree that it is pointless forcing people to vote when they have no interest or affiliation with any of the candidates?

There are other parties and other candidates. You can select the party and/or candidate that best represents you - or you can select none if you have 'no interest or affiliation with any'.

There are plenty of things that the government compels you to do - getting people to rock up on election day is hardly the most onerous.

Higher voter turnout out than 2012

It's undemocratic to force people to vote in my opinion. I am guessing from your comment in bold you would be referring to laws and taxations? It's a point, but the reason we pay taxes is (supposedly) for public benefits.

The way I'm reading james Dean's post, or how I want to, is that it's a bit galling to tell every suburban arseh*le (who may have work, kids at sport, their only day off) to get out and vote (for a second time, in a lousy local election, through no one's fault but the party's all finger pointing) when the current party who are in power don't even bother running someone because it's just a waste of money and time.

Now I'm in Freo and will never ever vote Liberal – I reckon Shorten is a gutless wonder and I'd even prefer Turnbull to him which makes me feel dirty but that's the mire of the Labor Party of today – but there is something very shitty about that. If the politicians aren't going to take it seriously why should anyone else?
