Cannot begin to imagine how those parents were feeling. Can't count the number of times I've left one kid or the other in the car because I didn't want to wake them up. Sounds like it was behind a closed gate within there own yard so they presumed it was okay. No doubt it will never happen again

It was great that they used the emergency text system and that so many people responded. Good outcome thank goodness

How does this system work? My son got the text while on the train on his way home from school this afternoon. Does it go to everyone within a certain area or something?

You have to assume it would be sent out from particular towers, so anything getting its signal from that radius.

That's what I'm thinking. My son said he got the message when he was around Glendalough but he got on the train at Canning Bridge so may well have been "chosen" as a phone that was in the area when the message was sent.

Don't you live in Parkwood or Langford or something? Or am I thinking of someone else?
Close but not me.

I'm close to people who have lived there and crime is rife. 5 mins from the city? Couldn't care less. I'd live in Pickering Brook in a heartbeat. Cafe strip? Don't care. Only point I care for a little if old heritage homes.

Well I can't think of anywhere close to those areas that is better than Vic Park. Willeton/Riverton are nice areas if you are 40 something with school aged children. Beckenham, Queens Park, Cannington all comfortably worse, Thornlie worse, Canning Vale light industrial... Vic Park/East Vic Park on the Western side of Albany Hwy is mostly nice. There are some ugly 1960s/70s blocks of flats but you get those in Subi, Mt Lawley, Maylands etc. too.

On the topics of Perth transport infrastructure and urban development, what do people see as the next ugly duckling area(s)?

Depending how far back in time you go, areas of Perth were considered average, dodgy etc. and are now sought after. I had family spend a few years in Nedlands back in the 60s I think it was and it was just a regular suburb where a single income family of 5 could afford to live. Subiaco, Carlisle/Lathlain, Maylands... these areas all had working class stigmas and have become popular and expensive. And of course places like Bull Creek, Duncraig etc. that were once seen as the outskirts are now comparatively close to the city.

So, what's next? I reckon Queens Park has potential. 10km from the city, already connected by rail and Albany Hwy. Plentyf more scope for development.

$250k for a 3 bed house.

South of the river is always inexplicably undervalued compared to north of the river. Same distance from the city and you will comfortably pay more for north. And yes, I know that area well, its prime to go up in value; 10-12km from the city, 10-15 mins by train, easy connection to some major roads.

Family homes, nice parks, good public school zoning etc. aren't usually drivers for people without school aged kids. I'd happily live in Riverton, Shelly etc but it's not somewhere I'd look right now if I was in the market.

People get a bit hung up on 'good' vs 'bad' areas but really most people base their decision on where to live on their budget and stage of life. I could afford to live in a bigger house with a bigger yard etc. but I'd rather live closer to the city and transport etc. Ideally you want to be able to tick every box but if you want a family home in a top area etc. then you're looking at a 7 figure price tag which is out of reach to most people.

I think it's that mindset that the cbd is on the northern side and having to cross that river is a task

Having lived around these postcodes my entire life, Vic Park included, I'd say Beckenham, Thornlie and Canning Vale are comfortably ahead of Vic Park. I lived in St James for a while and I've never felt more unsafe in my own house. Como is expensive but has one of the highest break in and burglary rates in Perth.

Cannington and QP are pretty dodge areas though.

You'd probably be in the minority there.
