I moved into an estate house in March. We built and had problems but we lived in the worst house in the state. It really was awful. We had bullshit inspections every 3 months. I don't give a shit that it looks like every other house in the area. I've lived in dumps since 1998. Everything is new here, independently verified that it's fine. Instead of buying off the plan we undertook several mods to suit us. We have a large grassed backyard and a garage instead of paving and a carport. We're one minute walk from the station that takes us 30 mins to get into town. It's not the best, but it's ok for us.

Good luck cleaning fat, oil etc out of grout.
Depends what colour/size of tile you use and how wide and what colour your grout is. Glass splashbacks suck shit. They show up every single spot of grease and it's nigh on impossible to keep clean unless you're the most anally retentive clean freak on earth.. which I'm not.

I would have thought this as well but I just had white subway type tiles put in a few years back and they seem to take pretty minimal cleaning.

Only thing that annoys me about them is some tiles are uneven behind the cooktop because the wall underneath was very rough particularly on a join between fibro and plaster sections.

I was thinking you'd get a similar problem with big glossy tiles that we currently have with a big glossy piece of glass. I was thinking something patterned and/or with a matte/textured finish would be the way to go.

Maybe something like this..

My sister's house I rented had something like an aluminum one I think and you were always cleaning the thing (well at least supposed to be :D) because absolutely everything showed up on it.

Old trick from when I rented
Glad Wrap over the tiles several times
Just before inspections or moving peel off the wrap= clean tiles
Understand the thinking behind doing it in a rental but I feel I shouldn't have to do that in my own house besides the fact the wife would never go for it.

We have a glass splashback and it's ******* impossible to keep clean. When we redo our kitchen we'll be going the tiled splashback I think.
our glass splash back is a long glass window, letting in loads of light and easy to clean (5 minutes one a quarter). The set back between the stove and the glass may be the secret.

Why is double brick such a thing in perth?!?
We can get away with using double brick because we're in a low seismic zone. Other places around the country build using frames and drywall because they can't use double brick. At some historical time it probably worked cheaper to build this way, so this became the industry standard. Not sure if that is still the case, I guess the economies of scale already exist for bricks here.

Also the fact it's a window would mean it doesn't show up dirt quite as easily as something with a single colour behind it I imagine.

So Roe 8 is in the news again. I dont like when they trash the environment with infrastructure but from the looks of it its not even that bad. Its not going through the main water sections of the wetland and it will be raised so its still connected on both sides.

Also there is so much resistance from people near Leach Hwy but its not even going to be changed all that much. Just a couple of fly over passes at the intersections. One of my friends that lives near there had someone knocking on the door trying to get signatures against it but she just laughed it off and said its barely going to change as Leach Hwy is already a main road with trucks.

You can be my tenant any day.

Last tenants I had left grease and shit all over the kitchen, not to mention leaving half their shit behind before doing a runner with a month's unpaid rent. And a bunch of other issue I can't be arsed listing. SFA an owner can do about this other than tidy the joint up; sell up; and enjoy the capital gain.
