So make a helmet with less blindspots, like I said make a lightweight kid version that doesn't look stupid and they will be more likely to wear it.
Okay. Here you go.

Honestly, what's wrong with that?

I don't wear a helmet when I ride. I'm a conscientious objector to the helmet law.

I play by European rules... where people actually ride and get exercise because they don't have a nanny state putting up barriers that discourages cycling.

Ffs, it’s their to help save your life not win a beauty contest. I can tell you that you’re going to look a darn sight worse when you come off it when you aren’t wearing it.

Either wear the protective gear or don’t ride and that applies to all the hipsters with their “beach” bikes as well.

Can’t underdtand why the police aren’t actively policing this

Why do you care if police are actively enforcing it or not? It doesn't affect you if grown adults choose not to wear a helmet. And no one is stopping you wearing one if you want.

Do you wear a seat belt in a car?

That's a tired false equivalency - do you think wearing a seatbelt discourages people from driving cars?

We're in the midst of an obesity epidemic and are quickly becoming one of the most obese countries in the world, yet we're also one of the only countries on the planet who decide to put up yet another barrier to people getting some exercise.

Red is countries with mandatory helmet laws:

What makes you think wearing a helmet discourages adults from riding bikes? And in any event, I don't give a shit about adults who are big enough and ugly enough to have fully considered the potential ramifications of not wearing a helmet before they ride a bike. I'm talking about kids.

The issue is Australian cities are the domain of the car. Even in the few busiest streets in the country, you have things like trams and trains to contend with. Go to your inner city suburbs where people are likely to drive and there's still really busy, dangerous intersections in places like Fitzroy and Newtown etc etc.

Copenhagen and Amsterdam are bike cities but the whole town is little streets and walking malls. You couldn't have cars going down them unless they were cities of 30,000 people.

If you're riding to the shops every day or live in a quiet area then you probably don't need a helmet. But as soon as you let it fly and people are on the Brunswick/Johnston intersection you're gonna get people getting hit. It's not bike v bike there like it is in those cities. You go to London and New York and not that many people ride either.

Australians love their cars.

The best is the parents who are riding with their kids and make their kids wear a helmet and they have their helmet hanging off the handle bars.

Okay. Here you go.

The pro cyclists wear helmets like that so you would think kids would want to be like them but maybe the douchebag wannabe pro cyclist adults put them off.

What makes you think wearing a helmet discourages adults from riding bikes?

There was a significant drop in cycling rates during the 90's when the laws came in, especially in rural areas where people felt they didn't need them (that's the thing - people will wear them if they feel they need them, regardless of laws. If I cycled on busy roads with traffic I'd probably wear one too). Anecdotally you hear it a lot as a reason and it always comes up in those surveys asking people why they don't cycle more.

And in any event, I don't give a shit about adults who are big enough and ugly enough to have fully considered the potential ramifications of not wearing a helmet before they ride a bike. I'm talking about kids.

Good, then we're agreed.

I'm really surprised at the number of kids I see on bikes not wearing helmets these days. Pretty sure it is still law and back when I was a kid and the law first came in even schools were part of the enforcement group.

Yeah I've noticed and like people who park over two parking bays and other such things it makes me very passive aggressive.

Anecdotally? So you just mean like people saying it and then other people repeating it like you?

Me: Hey fat campaigner why don't you ride a bike and get some exercise?

Fat campaigner: Well I would but the helmet makes me feel silly so I decided to just sit here and eat another box of donuts.

Yeah seems legit. Bloody nanny states encouraging the obesity epidemic eh?

Good, then we're agreed.
I think my posts were pretty clear that I was talking about kids although it would be good to see adults setting an example.

I’m with you.

If I’m riding around the river for a leisurely bike ride, I choose not to wear a helmet.

If I’m riding on the road at pace, I choose to wear a helmet.

Peter Hitchens (avid cyclist, but not a fan of the lycra set) argues that this is why helmets are pointless - by wearing them, they make the wearer believe it is safe to ride faster, which causes accidents.

Forward Press you're a teacher aren't you? Have you noticed this in school and if so do schools actually involve themselves at all nowadays?

Kids actually exercising? That's a new one.

In all seriousness not that I've noticed. I get the safety issues involved but when the kid is not on campus and it's not school times it is a parent's responsibility, not ours. We can only do so much but not many kids ride bikes to school nowadays anyway.
