Galleria was the ducks in the 90s. If my memory serves me correct Carousel v2.0 took over the mantle as #1 new shiny thing, then maybe Joondalup (don't think I've ever been, lolnorf), and more recently Karrinyup and Carousel v3.0 - both of which are hell on earth.

I went a few weeks ago and the Galleria still looks fine, it just has too many empty spaces. Myer has a whole empty third level and on the mezzanine bit where Rebel Sport is I would be surprised if the occupancy rate is higher than a third. Spending $200m on it is only going to drive up tenancy prices so will be interesting to see how they go attracting businesses back. People don't go to shopping centre food courts for $30 lunches.

Anyway this weather is amazing. Extra winter in Spring and just in time for the weekend. Swell.

I live near Karrinyup and the redevolopment they did there was amazing. I actually got lost when I first went there after the redevelopment even though I had been to the old shopping centre loads of times before, it was like a totally different place.

The only downside is there is a lot more traffic going there and it's harder to find parking as it is the new go to shopping centre.

I parked underneath on a saturday and got lost trying to find my car. I nearly gave up and caught a uber home.

I went there once one day and parked early when it was pretty empty. Then left later when it was quite full and even having the area it was in written down it was in it was hard finding the car.

Good luck if you forgot to do that.

I remember the Galleria being a state of the art shopping centre when it was redeveloped back in the 90s, it was the place to go.

Now it's run down with a lot of the shops closed or closing and nowhere near as many people shopping there like the glory days.
It's amazing what can change in just... checks notes... 35 years.

Got me buggered how any small retail outlets make money in major centres. Having a small retail space means paying a second massive mortgage/lease.

I reckon online shopping has found an equilibrium with most places having both options now. Most of the time if I am ordering anything online it is out of convenience rather than not being able to get it in a shop or the price being cheaper.

2 new public holidays starting 2028 (one of them is a Saturday though)

Easter Saturday will now be a public holiday, joining Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday. This will bring WA into line with Victoria, the ACT and the NT.

The King’s Birthday, now in late September during the Royal Show week, will be shifted to the second Monday in June to better align with other States.

A new weekday public holiday, to be known as Show Day, will be added to coincide with the first Monday of the September-October school holidays. Regional councils will be able to hold Show Day at another date in September.

WA Day will move from June to the second Monday in November.

Labour Day will shift to the second Monday in March to align with other States. In State election years, it will be on the third Monday in March to avoid having an election over a long weekend.

Pretty happy to hear this but a bit of a stitch up to everyone having one on a Saturday ( were they scared they’d miss out on productivity giving an extra week day off ?)

Tough on small business but I guess the people who give up their Easter break to work should be reasonably compensated

Waiting for the standard interview of coffee shop owners complaining about having to pay public holiday rates even more

Don't need to, just check the comments section of Cook's announcement.

Since we're somewhat on the subject, went to Galleria today to check out the last remnants of the fashion wing. Nearly totally empty now. You'd think Myer would also close when the redevelopment gets underway. The rest of the Galleria though was buzzing, especially the Woolworths end. Maybe there is some hope after all.

And of course, Coventry Village was jam packed and it's difficult to see how they solve the constant car park and traffic issues for that place. I now park closer to the Galleria and the former Morley Markets and walk across the road if I must visit during peak times.

Can’t see Myer closing - one of the staff was saying that it’s one of the busiest stores and given how hard it is to park at karrinyup and city, I’m not surprised

The entire corridor connecting Myer to the rest of the Galleria will have no shops though - and presumably extensive construction works too. Can it be sustained?

They kept karrinyup going so…

Who knows
I don’t imagine them returning if they close

I thought Easter Saturday was already a public holiday. Used to get more for working it in retail.

Happy to have more public holidays but seems like a lot of unnecessary moving parts. Just needed to create a new one in November and be done with it.

What happens to Foundation Day derby? Foundation Day became WA Day and now WA Day is in November. Way to acknowledge history.

I reckon it will be OK. As you said that mall is pretty empty already. Myer can basically shut off the entrance into the centre and operate as a stand alone store while the works are going on provided they can keep parking space outside.

When Carousel was first done (early 2000s?) I remember Myer stayed open in some kind of temporary configuration.

Looks like it will be the the Kings Day Derby now instead

Great if you're a Royals fan I guess
