The missus was looking at facebook the other night, and they'd posted a picture of the area of the fire, but superimposed over Perth on the map to give an indication of how big it is (******* huge, fwiw), along with a very clear caption explaining that it was only for comparison purposes. Within minutes, predictably, the comments are chockers with people asking if that's just showing where the smoke is, if they need to evacuate, and suggesting the boundaries of the map be extended as it doesn't even reach Northcliffe...

Lol!!!

I was thinking the other day that I'd like to see it compared to the area of Victoria.

NB These are not entries in my diary..

I hope they catch these F-wits SOON and throw the book at them. How do they not understand what they're doing? The attitude of whoever is starting these fires is beyond belief!

(I'm getting sick of the stink of my "fresh" washing - it smells permanently like "eau de bushfire". )

Just heard similar from a resident on the news, who thanked everyone who'd run to help try and put it out with shovels and other tools.
Unfortunately the bush in these parts is tinderbox dry, despite last week's rain, and it just goes whoosh!

The problem is we dont. The courts will give them a slap on the wrist with some community time and thats it. I believe they should have to pay all damages back. If it takes them a lifetime..... then so be it.

Plus take them to visit a burns ward at the local hospital. Then make them help look after those people (that'd be great community service), including serving dinner, feeding them if necessary, cleaning bedpans, etc. etc.

A woman allegedly slapped her son twice across the face to "discipline him" when he was misbehaving at the shops in Ellenbrook....
Wtf???


I am "pro" discipline via smacking but to slap a kid across the face (if this is true) rather than on the butt is either straight out abuse or the mum was too effing fat to bend over and reach her kid's bum.
Not having seen any footage of the mother, I can't confirm the latter.

Heard about the slap incident the other day...Didnt know she slapped the kid on the face though.

I remember going to the shops with mum as a kid and NOT acting up just incase I got a whip around the legs...How times have changed

You can probably discount the 1981-1992 period as it was only 11 years and isn't a long enough period to be considered. I was surprised though that the amount of rain from when records began increased until halfway through the 1900's.

What's certain though is the amount of rain falling in Perth has declined for more than half a century.

So there's a rise of 50-80-ish mm in the 1901-1950 period, then a 100+ mm drop in the next 60 years.
Have you read any theories as to what might've caused it? More tree-clearing, more carbon emissions, more data collection points? Makes me wonder what caused the high rainfall from '01-'50.

I know that we seem to get more showery-type stormy rain here, as opposed to full on grey sky dropping a roughly even amount of rain in every gauge - which means there can be pretty different rainfall totals from one suburb to another. I haven't been in Perth long enough to know if this sort of rainfall is the same as it's always been. How does that match up historically?

At Mundaring the signs have already gone up stating climate change means the dam will never go close to overflowing again. But what do climatologists and other government scientists know?

Agreed. And at workplaces too. We have this massive water tank, which is two stories high, and apparently the gutters from the building's roof don't run into it. They got the tank filled with water when we moved into the place in August 2013 and although the water lasts for years, none of the rain tops it up. When it does rain, I just stand there looking at all the water going into the drains and shake my head.

And I think this is the problem with our dams now - they are in the wrong place. It never ceases to amaze me that at times, no matter how heavy the rain, none ends up in the dams. With all the clearing and developing going on the catchment area run off has completely changed and so much water collection is bein missed.


I think new buildings (don't know about houses) have to have massive underground tanks installed. My husbands school has recently built a new building and they had to install storage tanks for about 100,000 litres of water - same for a new building on scabs road in mt hawthorn
