In my experience, with those types of schemes and voluntary redundancies etc, it's the workers they get rid of and the lazy dead wood is retained.

Definitely. The people with a bit of motivation and brains see the golden opportunity to get a payout and use it to launch themselves into a new career. The useless idiots don't see it or want that so they stay where they are.

My daughter is hoping that she receives a redundancy in the next round of cuts due at the end of the month. Said that she has had enough and will be better off doing temp work whenever it comes up. She can make this choice as she has no mortgage or debt and quite a few of the guys that she works with (late 50's) are also going to take the payouts as they have been there for more than 20 years and the payouts will be substantial - this loss of so much experience can have nothing but a detrimental effect on that particular agency and I'm sure it's happening across the public sector.

My wife as well. The payouts were originally based on length of service with no cap, but now there's a cap. Government legislation in the pipeline will remove the requirement to give anything other than accrued entitlements in the future. I'm not exactly sure how that's progressing though.

The ATO's dodgy primary production scheme for plantation timber is still credited as the world's most expensive firewood. Nice idea though, thinking outside the wooden box.

We have a fascination with big things in Australia. Lots of people visit the big banana/dinosaur/frog/crayfish/why, but I wouldn't make the trip myself.

There are other things going on, of course. Story telling about the ANZACs and a nyungah choir among what I've read, no doubt for some Federal Government funding leverage, so I'll give them credit for at least trying to get the rest of the country to fund a piece of the action.

I was actually going to visit Perth this weekend, but this is on so I'll leave it for another time.

It's still going on. People got a tax break, effectively paying them to put in trees, and then the managed investment schemes went belly up so I don't think they're even going to harvest the trees.
