I had an internet friend (known through another forum) come over from QLD to Perth for work for a couple of weeks. Her observation was that even though we dress like bogans we don't talk like bogans.

She obviously didn't visit the Kwinana/Rockingham/Mandurah region

Our bogans didn't sound like bogans to her. She was here a couple of times, at the last Royal Show and in then Central Perth, doing retail type stuff. The RS would have drawn in a pretty good cross-section.

I see the issue

There's definitely different Australian accents but I'm not sure if they're divided by regional lines or by socio-economic lines

I travelled around Australia when I was 20, but all I consciously noticed then were the different pool rules that each state had. A couple of years after that I went overseas and lived in London for a while and it was after living there that I began to recognise the different Australian accents. I got to the point where I accurately identified someone from Canberra. Maybe a fluke, but I could certainly pick Melbournians pretty frequently, and Queenslanders are pretty easy.

Being back in Australia I don't really notice them at all, except for a few of the different words and phrases that each region of Australia use.

On that note this is pretty interesting.

I don't see bowel of dicks anywhere.

I think you can pick an eastern stater if you talk to them long enough
Victorians are usually the easiest because they will spend a fair bit of the conversation just crapping on about how much better things are back home

There's a few giveaways regionally;

Sydney - beer/neer/fear will be one syllable (as opposed to bee-yah, nee-yah, fee-yah).
Melbourne - "E's" as "A's" - i.e. "Malbourne" - may only be a small subset of Vics who do this though.

that's what I used to think, now I'm not so sure. I think Queenslanders, especially north Queenslanders have a distinct regional accent, and I think South Australians are a bit different too.
Yeah- I reckon they both have a bit of a drawl.
I'm from western suburbs in Melb and say "cassell" while a lot of people on the other side say "carstle" as do the Perthites and NSW-men.
City people tend to talk faster than country people- but that's more of a national thing than a particularly regional thing.

Not many Chinese food joints places around

A whole host are opening in Northbridge and Vic Park/Bentley. They usually have the words 'authentic' or 'northern Chinese' etc in their description to indicate it's China Chinese.

Even then, they all still offer the usual staples of honey chicken, sizzling Mongolian beef etc.

went to the giants today. It was great. Organised chaos with people watching the giants slowly walk past, then racing off to the next vantage point to take more photos. Was a great buzz about the city, and i cant remember any other event having so many people turn out and watch.

Couldnt give 2 stiff shits what others say about tax payers money. Its a drop in the ocean.
