I live in the City of Vincent and have seen over a million dollars of our rates poured into bike ways to make the CofV a safer place to ride and for what - to hear they aren't up to scratch because of the fear of car doors and them not being wide enough. I don't know what bikers expect tbh - how about cars just get the hell off the roads and we leave it to the Lycra set to fund the upkeep.

$2.5m actually. Council was well aware of the issues before it spent any money so you can thank the Council for that, not the riders.
CofV wasn't really aiming for the lycra set though - these guys will ride pretty much anywhere regardless of the infrastructure - they were aiming for the regular bob and jane on upright bikes who should be encouraged to ride their bike instead of driving and parking everywhere. Regular bob and jane aren't keen on being moving road blocks or cruising at 30+km/h.

The cars don't just teleport to these towns, they get driven along roads to get there. Riding MBR outbound in the morning is not "in the city" either.

So what you're suggesting is that we need to introduce speed limits for cyclists?

Introduce? They are subject to the same speed limit as general vehicles.
Regardless, I thought the problem was that they go too slow?

The roads are indeed multi-use facilities and cyclists should obey the road rules if they want to use it, same as every other road user.

Treadmills are for running. I changed the order and deleted a bit which meant it didn't make as much sense. It wasn't a point I was trying to make.

These cyclists are not racing, or for the most part aren't. They are going on group rides (for whatever reasons are important to them - mates, exercise, looking at guys arses in lycra). Why shouldn't they use the road, legally.

It certainly wouldn't hurt on the shared bike paths!!
I walk my dog at piney lakes on the shared path- dogs are expected to be on a lead.
I've lost count of the amount of times that idiot cyclists- and there are only a small handful of repeat offenders - who a) zoom along at Olympic speeds and b) refuse to use their bell, almost collect me and my dog as they whizz past. I make sure I'm always on the LHS but I can never guarantee that my dog won't want to suddenly cross to the other side for a quick sniff. If I hear a bell, up I am happy to get off the path and let a cyclist pass me but these few inconsiderate blokes all think they own the pathway and don't have a care for anyone but themselves.
I hope, one day, to see one go A over T on a big honky nut- which, by the way, I kick off the paths so the nice cyclists don't hit them.

If you're on a bike approaching some people from behind, you want them to keep walking the way they are going, or move over to the left.

People freak out when they hear the bell by turning around to have a look, then moving in some random direction. It's worse when there is more than 1 of them.

I don't always bother ringing as I can see them and people will usually keep walking the way they're going, and I can react if they start to move.

I can certainly understand that- and I'd say that these blokes don't ring their bell for that reason but I'd bet that MOST courteous cyclists would slow down a bit when approaching a pedestrian so they CAN react to a sudden move. My automatic reaction is to move left off the path and shorten the dog's leash as the cyclist passes.
The funny thing is that, for these speedy cyclists, Piney Lakes is just a short cut. Lazy buggers! I reckon they'd be better off on the roads around because there isn't a real lot of traffic to worry about most of the time. Even at school times.

I too live in the CoV. Unlike you I think it's fantastic that an inner city council is taking the steps to separate bike LANES. The issue is that car drivers still don't respect them as a lane that they are not meant to be in. As such, they will park in them, pull out from drives across them, open car doors into them (would you open a car door onto a car lane without looking).

I don't have a problem with the bike lanes being implemented, the idea was sound but IMO not well thought through but it's also the whinging from bikers that have come with them being built. There is no doubt they have impacted on how cars can park - the parking lanes aren't wide enough, the bike lanes are too close and again not wide enough and throw in cars having to go both ways it's become a nightmare - bulwer street near Torres, is the perfect example of a nightmare.

Fwiw I always check my mirrors but again that could be like I said because I rode bikes

Do you mean Lake Monger? Herdsman isn't near the freeway.
There's a separate pedestrian-only footpath that runs parallel to shared path, i ride/walk/run there a lot and rarely see anyone using it because they prefer to mix with the cyclists.

As has been pointed out, having over 10 cyclists ride along that path together would be incredibly dangerous for the walkers, runners and slower cyclists using that path. There was someone killed a few years ago on a cycle path in Perth because they stepped out in front of a cyclist, who was doing ~30km/hr. In your world, that would happen all the time.

If cyclists want to ride at 30 km/h+, why do they want to do it in groups of 10 or more anyway? If you're hurtling along at such breakneck speed that you are unable to dodge unsuspecting dog walkers and children then it's not like you'll be making a whole lot of chit chat.

There's something about walking through areas where there are cars, bikes, lots of other people etc. that turns people into morons. If you're not observing idiocy as a pedestrian then chances are you are contributing to it.

lol- maybe you've got one leg doing more of the work? Like a rower who isn't pulling his weight making the boat go in circles I wonder what would happen if you walked for long enough ... you'd complete a full circle, I expect! I think the trick would be to always walk clockwise- your natural arc would be useful if you did that! (is your name Buddy, by any chance?? )
