What do people think of the screen displaying advertisement on the freeway-leach highway underpass (heading north)? The missus thinks it is stupid because it might be distracting.

"Lumber... we need lumber...."

I noticed it yesterday so I assume on the weekend. They turned it on today I am guessing in time for the jam that occur around that area in the morning.

I guess a picture of scarlett johansson in Avengers ad might be distracting ;)
It was turned on on Saturday but yeah don't think its been up much longer than that.

The biggest joke as far as taxis go is this:

https://131008.com/cgi-bin/cart/tra...ustralia&cat=&view_all_old=Search&clear=Clear

$290k for taxi plates? That's a second mortgage just to drive a car around. Ridiculous. No wonder they cost a fortune.

According to Google maps my house is 20km from the domestic airport. If I call a taxi (assuming business hours) it will cost me:

$1.50 to book it
$4.20 flagfall
$2.00 airport fee
$1.72/km x 20km = $34.40
Total: $42.10, ignoring the fact that I will be charged $49/hr for every second that the taxi isn't actually moving on top of that.

From experience it's a 20-30 minute journey depending on traffic, and generally costs about $50.

If I use my own car then I will use about 4 litres of petrol for a return trip ($5.20 at $1.30/L + any parking fees if I don't do a drop off). I've already got the car so buying it, maintaining it etc. is a sunk cost. So it costs me about $5 to drive to and from the airport, plus 40-60 minutes of my time that could potentially be used doing something income earning.

The taxi will drop me off, turn around and pick up an arriving passenger. If it does an equivalent reverse trip then there's about $100 in revenue in an hour, for $5 worth of petrol and a $2 airport toll. I accept that to have a taxi you need to buy/lease one and maintain it, but if you allow $15,000 a year which is very generous for a lease on a Falcon for example inclusive of servicing etc. then it's about $8/hr working a standard 48 week, 40 hour a week year. Yes taxis don't have passengers 8 hours a day 5 days a week but there has been an under supply since I turned 18 and started using them (2002) and I imagine long before then so it's not like they just drive laps of the city looking for people who might need a lift.

So, you have $100 in revenue in and $15 in costs ($5 + $2 + $8) out, that leaves $85/hr. Where the **** does that go? I mean no disrespect to cab drivers but it's not a difficult job. Not a nice one I'd imagine, but not difficult. If you can get $20/hr stacking shelves at Coles then IMO $25/hr ($30 tops) is fair for driving a car around and picking people up. I don't expect to drive to the airport for $10 and have come cabbie get 3 bucks for half an hour of his time and need me to tip him $2 so he can eat, that's 'murica way of thinking, but if you set aside $30/hr in wages then it still doesn't account for where over half the fare goes. I mean if you could drive people around and pocket $85/hr then I'd be first in line to sign me up, but that's not how it works.

Someone (my money is on the govt leasing plates and the taxi companies) is making a killing off the taxi industry. Uber is healthy if for nothing more than providing a bit of competition to one industry in one of the least competitive places on Earth.

So there is laws on people having to pick up after their dogs if they crap all over the place, should police officers have to pick up after their horses when they also crap?

Dog laws on crap removal are in place because dogs are walked or exercised where people walk and there are a lot of them. Dogs are also meat eaters, so their crap is toxic. Horses are transportation, so they are mainly in the street where people shouldn't be walking. You want the cops to cause a traffic snarl every time PC Dobbin drops a bomb?

Fair enough then. On footpaths is not good. I would probably even say something myself.

I nearly got arrested coming out of the football once because the police had parked on the verge while they were dealing with a traffic offender and everybody had to walk around the paddy wagon into the street to get around them. I told the lady cop it was illegal to park there and she didn't take too kindly to that.

Chasing down a violent offender, I wouldn't care less where they park.

Hampering traffic to give out a traffic fine, NO.

I have seen horses go around with a poop catcher on the back.

God it must have been horrible to be a pedestrian or cyclists back in the horse and cart era. Streets are a buttload cleaner these days

Have also noticed she's been MIA.
Still around the place
Yeah, I'm here. Just haven't had as much time with the kids on holidays and the internet has been driving me wild (downloading at 25kbps earlier and is now up to about 100 YIPPEE!). Have been on the Cats board, though, and popped in here last week but didn't have anything to say... for once ;)

I agree with your wife. Saw it one evening and the bright flashing blue was a bit too much like ambulance/cop lights for my liking. I found it distracting, too.

Need you to beat HBF's tally of 70k plus.

Maybe it's entertainment for when you get stuck in a jam- which is like every morning at 7/8am at about that point of the freeway! :)
Do you think they will put footy replays on, sometime? ;)
