See if you can get a pair of thermal socks- Kmart and Big W sell them, also stores like Kathmandu and Mountain Design have them. That might help- and will be cheaper than Ugg boots

You make a good point but I need something warm to wear outside the house as well

I'm not too worried about appearances either - the last pair of uggies I owned were so comfortable that I used duct tape to keep them together when they started falling apart rather than buy a new pair

Shit no! Fantastic project that has already slashed traffic times along Tonkin. They've done an amazing job managing traffic throughout the build.

I know because I used to go there as a kid every week back then. For some reason I thought it closed down when the shopping centre was redeveloped but I haven't been for a while. Maybe I need to make a visit for old times sake.

Someone told me yesterday that they took 45 minutes to get into the International airport the previous evening (Friday)- anyone else having trouble?

I believe the major roadworks are later in the evening so impact on peak hour traffic is limited. Unfortunately it needs to get done at some stage, best when traffic is minimal.

I haven't been into the international for a few months and, while I thought Tonkin was pretty ratty initially, with roads coming off all over the place and poor signage, I felt that the traffic has flowed pretty well during the day and the signage has improved.
I'm picking up from the domestic terminal at the end of this week- will be able to see for myself if the traffic has improved along Tonkin

In the last few years I was made redundant. I earned nowhere near that money and it took me about 10 months to find a new role. It's hard, but I got by because I was responsible and pumped money into my savings.

I don't like to hear of anyone being made redundant, it's gut wrenching to go through. However, my sympathy is pretty short beyond that should they be in severe financial difficulties because they squandered their sizeable bounty.

Been there also, it's part of the deal if you choose to go into a role in a cyclical industry. Never fun, but you have to roll with it.

I've got a mate who has been made redundant 2 or 3 times. He has a house with a mortgage and a wife and 2 kids under 5. He might be earning $130k now, but he hasn't been for most of his career. His wife worked full time until they decided to have kids and has been a stay at homer since. They seem to get by fine.

Not sure as I always go up Roe. The detour isn't too bad if it is at a time of day when there won't be a lot of trucks.

I think it's about lunchtime- maybe 11.30. not a problem- I can aim early and, if I'm stuck, my niece will wait. She's very patient

It's a tough one - I feel nervous for them all - I have a brother and son in law who are still lucky enough to have jobs but also have a couple of friends who have lost them. One of them a geologist is going to have to sell her house and move back in with her parents - personally I think she bought, at the advise of her parents too early but should still make a small profit and will be fine back at home. The other two have some savings but also large mortgages and partners who work so will be okay for a short time but are already finding jobs tough to get.

The problem I think will be the young blokes who went straight from school unskilled who return not qualified to do anything and will be needing to sell the v8 Utes and other toys to survive. I think things are going to get very bad and we may end up seeing a glut of mortgagee sales and a huge increase in homelessness and welfare.

The comments in that article were interesting with people being accused of being jealous of the FIFO workers - jealous of what - already we are seeing the results of the boom faltering with restaurants having to offer specials to keep their doors open and a reduction in rents. Hopefully lessons can be learnt
