I was born and grew up in the Perth. Brrrrr winters.
Then I flew off to college in the mid-west USA.
Showed my Perth winter coat to fellow student. Was told " you are going to die" and was taken shopping for real winter cloths.
When it was -30 and windchill -50, even those proper winter cloths needed other proper winter cloths over the top to approach not freezing to death.
Coming back to Oz realize that we do not dress properly for even the level of cold weather we have here.
The coldest I have ever been was in Washington DC in winter when they had a massive snowstorm there, I had only just arrived there after flying from Perth via Sydney and LA.
I'd never even seen snow before so I was ill equipped to deal with a snowstorm where the snow was about 3 or 4 feet deep and the temp was well below zero.
Me and a mate went out on the town one night there without even a jacket or jumper and nearly froze to death walking between bars, we didn't make that mistake again.
The North East Coast of the US in winter was far colder than anything I experienced in the UK or Europe in winter.
Perth winters I can get around in shorts and a t-shirt most of the time, it hardly ever gets cold enough that you need to wear a jacket or jumper.
