Anyone here know much about stand up paddle boards? Thinking about purchasing one.

There's a few lesser known brands for 1000 odd but dunno if it's worth getting a second hand known brand for around that price? Not charging 6ft waves either just cruising around doing **** all.

Yep love my SUPing. Usually head out 2-3 times a week. Fantastic work out and great for my dodgy back.

But do try before you buy. A cheapo board will set you back a grand, and a top of the range one is about $2.5k.

Just head down to wherever in your area has SUPs for hire and get one for a couple of hours one Sat morning. That's how I started.

I'm going to glass the next person who declares it's a waste of money that could be spent on schools and healthcare.

Can't remember who it was on the radio last week but they made a good point about the Stadium and Elizabeth Quay. They pretty much said that the decisions have been made now, it's of no use complaining about the cost, lets stop the whinging and actually embrace it and enjoy it.

Our governments ineptness of estimating payroll tax and iron ore estimations are the biggest blame, Then our inflation of giving a lot of public sector payrises (Teachers and nurses, who needs em?) some pretty big payrises which will drain resources from those sectors. the Nuses union conduct in 2013 was disgraceful. It worked however so they are laughing

Nobody even got Iron Ore being this low. I'll give Colin the benefit of the doubt in this respect. It would really suck to be a budgets estimate person atm.

Personally, I'm a fan of recent infrastructure and city-building projects:

• Elizabeth Quay
• Northbridge Link
• Burswood Stadium
• Perth Arena
• Fiona Stanley Hospital
• Going back a bit, you could also include the Forrest Hwy and Mandurah railway line

But yes, the State clearly has some budget issues. Part of the problem with the GST / Royalties issue is that there is a lag between royalty revenue increasing (or decreasing) and the GST adjusting.

So right now, royalty revenue has been slashed but it will take a while until the GST allocations catch up to reflect this. Of course, we had it doubly good a while back too - royalties skyrocketed and we got a more normal GST allocation until that was adjusted downwards.

While the iron ore price wasn't expected to be this bad, it was clear at the last budget that Treasury was making some pretty heroic assumptions to pad out the forward estimates.

The underlying issue is that WA's revenue is inseparably linked to the economy - royalties, depending on the iron ore price and stamp duty, dependent on housing construction and the real estate sector. Both can be great at the same time and both can fall flat at the same time because they are linked.

I'm not going to moan about infrastructure projects, because I think they are terrific improvements to our city and state that will last a very long time, but I think that there is certainly a need for some budget repair. At the very least the next State election will likely be competitive.

Oh all our infrastructure you've just mentioned were great and well needed. I felt like we probably could of negotiated a better deal with the stadium linking it next to crown TBO. People trash the stadium but it's an attraction and will last our lifetime.

If McGowan loses the election, he has to go. The It's time Factor would be really high for Colin atm.

When you have the politicians getting automatic pay rises above the rate of inflation and some amazing perks for ex pollies available I don't think anyone is in a position to be critical of others chasing more in their pockets

Barnett had plenty of opportunity to build a war chest while the boom was on and didn't - to be making excuses now and slashing people's jobs left right and centre is an absolute joke.

The sad thing is the opposition isn't going to be abt better

I rate McGowan and I don't think there's a Labor politician who could do any better. Barnett just has such a stranglehold on the position at the moment. I can't see him being beaten.

FWIW, I'm a swinging voter who voted Libs last election.

I love to say that it is the case but if he can't win elections, he gets rolled unfortunately. Kim Beaseley was another Labor pollie who suffered the same fate.

You and I both know oppositions don't get elected because of policy. It's because the people think the government and its leaders are so unpalatable that they turn to someone else. The Federal ALP were dominating against Tony Abbott's coalition without any concrete policies or promises.

Re: McGowan - he went to the last election with Metronet, a fully costed, planned and viable public transport network. Centrepiece of the WA ALP. Convincingly defeated despite Barnett staggering along with half-arsed solutions (light rail to Mirrabooka that is now cancelled, for example), because they were stable, things were getting done and times were good. The boom is over and suddenly the Opposition is viable to the people. This is not a coincidence.
